Presentation Introduction Radio Chamber Orchestra
Dutch Civil Engineering Band Motivation It is an honor for me to introduce you all to my orchestra, The Dutch Civil Engineering Band and to tell you something about our orchestra en myself, as I am also the conductor and partially founder of the DCEB. We would like to start to thank the chairman, mr Peter Nessbit, for this invitation. My name is Dick Teunissen. My professions are trumpeter and conductor. Besides these professions I have also given trumpet lessons at the Academy of Music in Arnhem and Hilversum. I started as a trumpeter at the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and after a few years I became the principal trumpeter at the Radio Chamber Orchestra, in which I have been working for 30 years. I start to tell you about my former orchestra, The Radio Chamber Orchestra. Afterwards, I explain you the Dutch Civil Engineering Band and my motivation to conduct it.

Radio Chamber Orchestra
Founded in 1945 – 2006 Classic Symphony Orchestra Modern and classic music Concerts in Holland and abroad Working with two conductors In 2006 renamed into Radio Chamber Philharmonic Double concert Vivaldi The Radio Chamber Orchestra was founded is 1973 and lasted until It was a Classic Symphony Orchestra with a small number of musicians. That’s why it was named a Chamber orchestra. It was a very interesting orchestra because of its modern and classic music. The concerts always took place at the biggest concert halls in Holland. The RCO was also active in foreign countries; people could listen to our plays concerts on the radio or watch them on TV, live or recorded. To achieve the best performance for both the modern and classic programs, the RCO has always had two conductors who were specialized in the modern or the ancient music . The RCO was the first orchestra who worked with two conductors. Mr. Frans Brüggen and Ton koopman were the conductors for the ancient parts and for the modern parts we had the Hungarian conductor and composer Peter Ötvös. In 2006 the RCO was renamed into the Radio Chamber Philharmonic. With this transformation they also extended the orchestra with more musicians to offer a bigger and more flexible program for the audience. I would like to show you a piece of my work as a trumpeter for the RCO. It’s a part of the double concerto of Vilvaldi the conductor is Ton Koopman.

Dutch Civil Engineering Band
Personal motivation Exists for 25 years Wide range of music 70 musicians working within Engineering business Rehearsals in Harderwijk, once a month Brass Band Composition DCEB Another devotion of me is conducting for the DCEB. I am especially interested in working for amateur full band harmony and brassbands, because conducting motivated amateurs is incredibly fun and inspiring. The DCEB orchestra exists already for 25 years!! The DCEB is grown into a wonderful symphony orchestra with a wide range of music. I am very proud of this orchestra. I am working with great pleasure for this orchester. The DCEB exists of almost 70 musicians, both men and women, who are working within the engineering business. They come from different parts of Holland, some of them travel almost 200 km for the rehearsals. The rehearsals take place once a month from 10 AM until 2.30 PM in Harderwijk. Harderwijk is a village in the centre of Holland. Brass band is literal translated “Copper orchestra”, an orchestra which is composed of brass instruments . The number of musicians and the assembly in a brass band is very accurate. The brass band originally comes from the United Kingdom, but of course you all knew this!! The DCEB is a full band harmony orchestra which does not have a determined number of players, like a brass band. The DCEB is composed of copper and wooden instruments like clarinets, flutes, oboe’s , bassoon and saxophones. We also have string instruments like celli and contrabasses. The DCEB is a richly filled orchestra, we can also call it a symphony wind band. I would like to show you some pictures of the DCEB.

This picture was made in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw during a concert. In the past 25 years we have been on tour in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary and now for the second time we have been invited in England. We also made a few LP’s and CD’s. The repertory of the DCEB is incredibly divers, from baroque untill pop music. It is also the diversity of the music which makes it very interesting for me. Because of my experience of being a trumpeter at the RCO for 30 years, I have developed a broad knowledge of old and modern music. With this experience I am able to transfer this knowledge onto the musicians of the DCEB and I am able to introduce them into music of different centuries. You will now hear a recording of the DCEB, in which I play the trumpet.

Motivation Long-term relationships Performance of musicians
Tonight: King School Tomorrow: Brass Band Festival, Leisure Centre Stroud People have been asking me how an orchestra and I can keep up with each other for so many years. Well, besides my long-term relationship with the RCO for 30 years, I can sincerely say that my relationship with an other Dutch orchestra is even longer, already for 35 years! It is important for me not to look at the actual level of the person behind the instrument. My special interest goes out to the motivation, inspiration en study of the musicians; because only then they can bring their performance to a higher level. I really hope to enjoy of this orchestra for many more years. I hope that with this presentation I have made you very curious for the performance of the DCEB. I hope I will meet you tonight at the Kings School or tomorrow in the Leisure Centre in Stroud. Also the board and members would really appreciate to meet you all.
