3 Chinook Salmon AKA: King salmon.
Appearance: 40 pounds (18 kg), but can be up to 120 pounds (55 kg)., at sea, they are blue-green back with silver flanks, Maturity to spawning: Chinook mature at about 36 inches and 30 pounds. Diet: insects, amphipods, and other crustaceans while young, and mainly fish as adults. Food chain connection: Human uses: Food. Misc. facts: They are the most prized game salmon for sport fishers. Chinook is the largest species of salmon.

4 Coho Salmon Other names: Silver Salmon
Appearance: The average weight of adult Coho is 8 pounds (3.6 kg), but can weigh up to 36 pounds (16 kg). Coho may measure more than 2 feet (61 cm) in length. Coho salmon have dark metallic blue or greenish backs with silver sides. Maturity to spawning: An adult Coho salmon will feed and continue to grow until it reaches maturity after only about 18 months at sea. Diet: Coho salmon feed on aquatic bugs.  Coho salmon will not feed off the bottom of streams or non-moving objects.  Coho salmon only feed  during the day and quit eating once it gets dark. Food chain connection: Eat Chum salmon. Human uses: Food. Misc. facts: A light belly and there are small black spots on the back and upper lobe of the tail while in the ocean.

5 Sockeye Salmon Other names: The name "sockeye" is thought to have been a interpretation of various Indian tribes' word “sukkai.” Sockeye also known as bluebacks. This, of course, doesn’t relate to their reddish color that happens in late adulthood for spawning purposes. Appearance: The size of an adult returning to spawn may measure up to 2ft., 8in. long and 8 pounds. They typically turn bright red, with a green head. A hump on there back. Maturity to spawning: An adult Sockeye salmon will feed and continue to grow until it reaches maturity at 4 to 5 years of age. Diet: Insects when they are at the juvenile stage. Human uses: Food. Misc. facts The Sockeye salmon's flesh is ruby red in color.

6 Pink Salmon Other names: Humpback salmon.
Appearance: Found in North America weighing on average between 3 1/2 and 5 pounds, with an average length of inches. Male pinks develop a very distinct beak and their body color darkens and also becomes much more pronounced. Maturity to spawning: After returning to their spawning stream, their coloring changes to pale grey on the tail-end, with a yellowish white belly. Diet: Water dwelling insects. Food chain connection Human uses: Caviar. Misc. facts: Tiny scales. The most abundance of fish in the U.S.

7 Chum Salmon Other names: Dog, Keta, or Calico salmon.
Appearance: They generally weigh 12 to 15 lbs, and usually measure 18 to 30 inches long. This is marked by a bold, jagged, reddish line and a jagged black line on the tail end. Maturity to spawning: After 2 to 3 years at sea, the chum salmon are ready to spawn. Diet: They feed primarily on plankton and crustaceans such as tiny shrimp. Food chain connection: Helps the eggs down stream get nutrients. Human uses: Stock fish. Misc. facts: Both sexes develop a “tiger stripe” pattern of bold red and black stripes.

8 Chum alevin video Next you will see a short video clip of one of the salmon in our salmon restoration system. It is in the alevin stage, which means it still has its eggsac. Our classmates will share more about what we’ve done to restore salmon in Brezee Creek when we come back on Wednesday.
