Hunger Define hunger? How does it make you feel?
How would you feel if you didn’t know when you would be fed next? What actions would you take if you were in this situation (poor and hungry)? Globally tens of thousands of people die each day as a consequence of malnutrition, most are children in the developing world. Few die of under-nutrition in the US. More die of over-nutrition, a problem more prevalent among the US poor than the affluent.

Individual ~ $12,060 Family of 4 ~ $24,600 2 adults+ 2 kids If you were earning twice this amount would you still be poor? (reside in Bay Area) 2014% of US population or 46.7 M live in poverty or 14.8% of the US population. (21% of kids under 18 live in poor families).

Fed minimum wage $7.25/hr Fed full-time min wage $15,080/year Businesses with <$500,000 year gross and no interstate commerce exempt from paying min wage. Some young (<20 yrs) and tip workers may be exempt from min wage Calif Min Wage $10.50 effective In Calif. Gov Brown signed legislation that put into effect annual incremental increase to $15/hr by Small businesses will follow same path but with one extra year to reach $15/hr (2023)

Federal Poverty level guideline single= $12,060 family= $24,600 Poverty level for family of 4 is $24,600. NOTE: Working FT at minimum wage DOES NOT put a person above the poverty level for a family of 4 SJ next increase to Next month!!!

Government Programs Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program SNAP CalFresh in CA $1 CalFresh spent generate $1.79 of activity in the local economy Max benefit <$2/meal per family member School breakfasts and lunches provide low-income children with nourishment at little or no cost. Avg benefit $311/household. Avg #/household 2.3 For each SNAP dollar spent $1.79 of economic activity in the local community is generated (employ the checker, butcher and shelf stocker at the market)
