1 International Students: 5 Tips for Success
Demonstrate initiative and make the process as easy as possible for your potential employer Practice explaining F-1 work authorization status in “pitch” form Do not expect to walk away from a career fair with a recruiter contact or interview; instead use the fair to gather industry information and practice the U.S. style job search Resist asking, “do you sponsor” when speaking with recruiters; instead let them see your value first Look beyond Career Connections to industry specific and general job search sites Find “hidden opportunities” through informational interviewing and networking Utilize your personal network including family, friends, peers, faculty, and Babson connections Consider attending events aligned with your cultural affinity to find mentors and opportunities If you need help utilizing any of these tips or if the U.S. job search is new to you, schedule an appointment Look out for monthly “International Student Career Updates” and specialized events Understand F-1 limitations Re-frame career fair goals Expand the search Lean In to your network Connect with CCD’s int’l advisor Its no secret that your international student status in the U.S. can make the job search even more challenging. While CCD’s resources and events are certainly useful for you to take advantage of, keep in mind that if you are an international student hoping to work within the U.S., your strategy MUST include additional resources; and networking will be extremely helpful in finding opportunities that may not typically be open to hiring international students.
