Listen and observe •LMNOP was a new program. •Evaluations
•Conversations with attendees •Talking with patrons •Observe who came to LMNOP programs After hours programming was a new concept for us. We needed feedback. It wasn’t just moms coming to programs. The collection wasn’t the focus – the program was the focus.
24
EVALUATIONS
26
•Be intentional about looking to your community
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT •Be intentional about looking to your community •”Ask patrons to say what matters to them, not what programs you want to do.” - Erika Freudenberg, Mover & Shaker, Red Hook, NY, public library. Instead of continuing to say here is what we think moms want, we listened to our community in a variety of ways.
27
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT •Our staff need to engage patrons – talk to them about program, do more than rote check-out. •Engagement is also how we built relationships / partnerships so we are able to meet those needs/ interests we are being told about.
28
MOMS →MAKERS •We became flexible with days and times.
•We expanded the type of program – collaboration for classes •Life hacks/skill-building – trick, shortcut, skill, novelty or method that increases productivity and efficiency. Looking at the feedback, the evidence, what we were seeing, we knew LMNOP needed to change if it was to grow and continue to be viable. Moms became Makers.
29
CALLIGRAPHY aka Collaboration
Met during the day, collaboration, on-going class.

WHAT IS A MAKER SPACE? •DIY space where people can gather to create, invent and learn •Sewing machines, knitting needles, card games, crafts, etc. •Including more than hard technology means you are being inclusive •”Making” is for all ages, but we are encouraging people to want to learn by making it fun Making is more than geeks
33
MAKER SPACE Because there is no wrong way to “make”:
•Maker spaces lead to self-empowerment •a gain in creative confidence
34
MAKER SPACE •Maker spaces increase knowledge of how the world works
•Help people become active producers rather than passive consumers •”Hone the hack” – think abstractly and make things work better for each person
35
Creativity is as important as literacy.
MAKER SPACE Creativity is as important as literacy. - Sir Ken Robinson, University of Warwick

MAKER SPACES In a library? Really? YES!
•Libraries have always been about learning/information •Libraries already have resource materials such as books and the Internet for patrons to use as reference •Equitable access! Free!
41
MAKER SPACES AT LINCOLN CITY LIBRARIES
•One main maker space at our central library •Big 3-D printer will “live” there •Rotating kits and two smaller 3-D printers that can be checked out by branches for programming.
