Burnout – History and Background
Clinical psychologist Dr. Herbert Freudenberger first identified the construct “staff burnout" in the early 1970s. He was the first to describe symptoms and phases of “burnout.” Yet, it was brought to national attention by American professor and social psychologist, Dr. Christina Maslach during the 1970’s. Dr. Maslach is known for her work on “occupational burnout.”
14
Defining Burnout Dr. Herbert Freudenberger (1975) defined “Burnout” as
“a state of exhaustion and frustration caused by unrealistic expectations.” He believed burnout to be “a consumption of energy – exhaustion due to excessive demands by family, work, friends, lovers, value systems, or society – that robs a person of all energy, coping mechanisms and inner strength.”
15
Symptoms of Burnout Prolonged fatigue and long-term exhaustion
Prolonged sense of being unmotivated, depressed, or cynical about job A strong desire to be disengaged and/or isolated Decreased productivity and job performance No Author. “Depression: What is Burnout?” retrieved from

“The Simplified Sequence of Burnout”
Fatigue and Exhaustion Decreased Productivity “Leave Syndrome” - a strong desire to find an “exit,” switch careers, absenteeism, teacher turnover, etc. Obviously, Burnout is a major problem!

Statistics about burnout’s Impact
“Nearly half of all beginning teachers will leave their classrooms within five years, only to be replaced by another fresh-faced educator.” Students’ productivity is negatively impacted when teachers experience burnout. School districts lose more than 2.2 billion dollars annually due to teacher attrition. Phillips, Owen (2015) “Revolving door of teachers costs schools billions every year” in NPRed
