1 Convert Sounds to the IIGS from Windows, Mac, Linux, Solaris,
KansasFest 2017 Convert Sounds to the IIGS from Windows, Mac, Linux, Solaris, and other operating systems By Geoff Weiss

2 Purpose Listen to sampled sound files on the Apple IIGS.
Create new rSounds, use with GS/OS 6.0.x desktop software.

3 Overview Run on most modern computer systems.
Compatible with most audio sound formats. Use open source program: sox (Sound eXchange). Convert to 8-bit, unsigned, single channel, Hz or Hz PCM (raw binary).

4 Overview Move result to Apple IIGS.
Check file to see if 0’s need to be filtered. Use as-is or use rSounder to convert to rSound file.

5 sox “Swiss army knife of sound processing”
Download from or install from distribution’s package repository. Support formats such as .raw, .aiff, .ogg, .au, .wav, .opus, and much, much more. Command-line interface (not scary).

6 Conversion Identify audio file to convert to be used on the Apple IIGS (download or use one that you have). If mp3 file, some version of sox have support and some does not. The mp3 decoder called lame can convert to wave which can be converted to raw by sox. lame --decode file.mp3 file.wav sox file.wav -c 1 -r bits 8 --encoding unsigned file.raw

7 Move to Apple IIGS Transfer raw file to IIGS. Start IIGS or emulator.
If using emulator, use to_pro (comes with KEGS and compatible): cd /path/to/disk-images ./to_pro /path/to/file.raw Start IIGS or emulator.

8 Listen to raw file Check raw sound file to make sure it is complete.
Start AudioZap. Open raw file (disk POOF1 if used to_pro). Play rate 429 for Hz or rate 215 for Hz. Sounds that are cut off need “Filter zeros”, found in F/X menu.

9 Convert to rSound Start rSounder3. Open raw sound file (disk POOF1 if used to_pro). Set sound name. Channel 0 or 1 (left or right speaker). Frequency (bit rate set by sox). Save as rSound.
