1 Adjectives and Nouns There are three possible natural endings for adjectives! - o e consonant Adjectives that naturally end with an “-o” will change their ending to an “-a” when used with a feminine noun Adjectives that naturally end with an “-e ” or a consonant do NOT change their gender endings- they are considered neutral. All adjectives become plural with plural nouns. Always look for “gender” agreement with the noun before “plurality” agreement.

2 Adjectives and Nouns In Spanish, the adjective needs to correspond
first in gender and then in number with the noun. For example: “blanco” is the dictionary form of the word “white” - the white car = el coche blanco (masculine singular) No change required since “blanco” naturally reflects masculine -the white house = la casa blanca (feminine singular) Change the “-o” to an “-a” to better reflect the feminine noun. -the white cars = los coches blancos (masculine plural) -the white houses = las casas blancas (feminine plural)

3 Adjectives and Nouns All adjectives become plural with plural nouns.
In Spanish, the adjective needs to correspond first in gender and then in number with the noun. For example: “grande” is the dictionary form of the word “big” - the big car = el coche grande (masculine singular) No change required since “grande” is naturally neutral -the big house = la casa grande (feminine singular) -the big cars = los coches grandes (masculine plural) -the big houses = las casas grandes (feminine plural) All adjectives become plural with plural nouns.

4 Adjectives and Nouns Did you notice that there were adjectives before and after the nouns? The articles “a, an, the” are actually adjectives. When an adjective directly or indirectly implies a quantity, it's called a “quantitative adjective” and is placed before the noun. (“la casa” o “una casa” o “una casa”) “the house” or “a house” or “one house” all imply “a single” house (“las casas” o “unas casas” o “dos casas” ) “the houses” or “some houses” or “two houses” all imply “more than one” SO... any adjective referring to “how many”, including the articles a/an/the, will be treated as “quantitative adjectives” and are placed before a noun.

5 Adjectives and Nouns Why are there also adjectives placed after the nouns? When an adjective is distinctly descriptive, it is giving new information about the noun. A “distinctly descriptive adjective” is placed after the noun! For example, “the white car” would be: - el coche blanco (masculine singular) Since all cars are not naturally white, this is a distinctive feature. Therefore, the descriptive adjective “blanco” comes after the noun! Another example: - la leche chocolate (feminine singular) means chocolate milk Since all milk is not naturally chocolate, this is a distinctive feature. Therefore, the descriptive adjective gets placed after the noun! * Since milk is naturally white, the use of the adjective white (blanca) when referring to regular white milk is not necessary to use.

6 Adjectives and Nouns Some adjectives have the option of being placed before or after! Certain adjectives can be used figuratively or literally. Their meaning changes slightly in each location. For example: el pobre chico: figuratively means the “unfortunate” boy (pobre is before the noun) el chico pobre: literally means the “penniless” boy (pobre is after the noun)

7 Adjectives and Nouns Some adjectives have the option of being placed before or after! The use of “bueno” and “malo” (good & bad) is so common, that either placement is acceptable with no change of meaning. when placed before masculine nouns. “bueno” actually becomes “buen” “malo” becomes “mal”
