RECAP from yesterday… Directions: Each group has a set of index cards on your desk. Use the index to answer the following questions (putting one answer on each card). You will use several cards to record your answers. Write in marker – no pencil! What do you know about refugees? What are some words and concepts that you associate with the word refugee? THINK: You are in danger and must leave your homeland immediately. You have 30 minutes to pack a small bag of your belongings. What will you take and what will you leave behind?

In looking over the responses are there any you would add? Where do these ideas & concepts come from? Are they accurate?

Directions: You and your group will go around the room (quietly) and read the different stories of immigrants and look at the images provided – not necessarily related to each other. As you read and observe, record the following: Observations about the picture Headline/caption for the picture A brief summary of the article WHAT DID YOU LEARN?

Refugee vs. Guest Worker
SEE NEXT SLIDE FOR DEFINITIONS & EXAMPLES Can alter the cultural landscape of a country! flee to a country in the same region as their home country Guest workers are legal, documented migrants who have work visas, usually short term. REFUGEE DEFINED: “a person who has a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion.” IDP Repatriation Asylum remittances

REFUGEE: A person has the right to NOT be forced to return to an unsafe environment, to make all efforts to keep the family together and the right to security and freedom of movement. IDP: Internally Displaced Person. People who have been displaced within their own countries. THINK: Hurricane Katrina. Can also be people that stay within their own country that have faced armed conflict and human rights violations. Repatriation: Once conditions improve in country of origin, the UNHCR (United Nations Refugee Agency) helps refugees return. Remember: Relocation is NEVER a permanent situation. The goal is to always return home. Asylum: A person’s right to protection in the 1st country in which the refugee arrives. Asylum Seeker: What a migrant is identified as until the receiving country reviews and approves claim for protection. A person becomes a “refugee” once cleared by the receiving country.

GUEST WORKER: Guest workers are legal, documented workers/migrants who have work visas. These workers are usually short term residents. Remittances: Money earned by guest worker that is sent home to family in origin country. Typically perform low skilled jobs (ie. Agriculture, industry and domestic labor. Think about our map from class. The term guest worker was used following WWII when so many men died and Germany needed people to work (to stimulate economy) and replace the population that died during the war.

Homework: DIRECTIONS: Choose an image or a story that you discussed in class today and write a postcard to someone back home about your experience (journey, life in the refugee camp, how you are feeling, etc.). You can also choose to write about what it might have been like if they had not left their country. Include: TO location (origin country) FROM location (current country) Illustration that relates to letter (journey, camp, etc.) Letter must be at least 10 sentences. Color, neatness and thoroughness are important. FRIDAY
