Sea Turtles return to the very same beaches they were born at to lay their eggs. In some cases the turtles migrate across the entire Pacific Ocean to reach their home beach. How are the turtles able to return to the exact same beach they were born at, after traveling thousands of miles and being gone for several years?

Magnets Magnets have been in use for over 2,000 yrs.
In Magnesia, Greece the mineral magnetite was discovered in rocks. The people saw that these rocks attracted iron. Magnetism- comes from Magnesia and is the attraction of a magnet for another object.

Magnets About 1,000 yrs. ago people discovered that by hanging a piece of magnetite from a string, one part of the rock would always point at a certain star. What star was this? North Star or the direction North

Magnetic Poles Any magnet, no matter what its shape, has two ends, each one called a magnetic pole. A pole is an area of a magnet where the magnetic effect is strongest.

2 ( a north pole and a south pole) Two north poles or two south poles = alike poles One north pole and one south pole = unlike or opposite poles

Magnetic Interactions
Opposites Attract! Magnetic poles that are alike repel each other and magnetic poles that are unlike attract each other.

What would happen if you broke a magnet into two pieces? Would you have one piece be the north pole and the other piece be the south pole?

Magnetic Fields Magnetic Field- the region of magnetic force around a magnet You can not see a magnetic field, but you can see it’s effects.
