9 GENERATING INTERACTION between SCHEMA and TEXT
GIST GENERATING INTERACTION between SCHEMA and TEXT

10 Why Use the GIST Method? Problem: Solution: GIST
How many times have you asked yourself, “What did I just read?” Lost in the details Lose author’s message Solution: GIST Intention Focus Eye on the big picture Advance organizer

11 Before Reading 1. Reflect on title of article: eg. “ Poverty and Social Work” -Power of anticipation -Define words you don’t know. 2. Read abstract & find thesis statement. (If applicable) Eg: “Social workers should help relieve poverty, & the best way to do this is for practitioners to keep close contact with local community, working in partnership with a joint focus on prevention and empowerment.” 3. Make general outline of headings & subheadings -Framework-Big picture -Anticipation

12 Outline of “Poverty and Social Work”
I. Community-Oriented Social Work (COSW) II. Characteristics of COSW a. COSW is associated with empowerment b. COSW is local c. COSW is preventative d. COSW involves partnership III. COSW in other countries IV. Poverty-focused COSW: margin to mainstream

13 By the end of this workshop you’ll be able to..
1. Practice the #1 tip for improving reading comprehension 2. Recognize the 10 parts of an academic article and determine which parts are essential (and which parts may be skimmed/skipped) 3. Define and apply the GIST method of reading academic articles * apply strategies before reading an article * apply strategies while reading an article * apply strategies after reading an article

14 During Reading Reflect: What do you expect each section to be about?
- Tip: turn headings into questions (keep in mind titles and subtitles) Define words you don’t know -words that are bold, italicized and/or repeated Each paragraph has one main point -Tip: write the main point in the margin (keep in mind titles and subtitles) Write “gist” of each section -Tip: Look for common themes among key points of each paragraph

15 Find “Gist” of Each Section
Community-Oriented Social Work (COSW) Gist: Community defined: geographic locality or shared interest. Community level seeks to change the community, not the individual.

16 Find “Gist” of Each Section
II. Characteristics of COSW COSW is associated with empowerment Gist: Design empowering services (eg. Credit unions) so people can take over their own lives. b. COSW is local Gist: When social workers “live on the patch,” they have close sensitivity to and are more accepted by the community. c. COSW is preventative Gist: Preventative intervention is better than dealing with its effects. Identify needs and help at an early stage. d. COSW involves partnership Gist: Ensuring effective integration of services is essential. Involving service users makes more effective COSW

17 Find “Gist” of Each Section
III. COSW in other countries Gist: Poverty is an international problem, it leads to “all” other problems. Approaches vary by location.

18 Find “Gist” of Each Section
IV. Poverty-Focused COSW: Margin to Mainstream Gist: Casework and community development are NOT rivals. Through structure, community building and social action, poverty can by combatted. Eg. Credit Union

19 By the end of this workshop you’ll be able to..

20 After Reading Read internal summaries and determine “gist” of entire article. -Tip: Look for common elements among the “gist” of each section. Gist of entire article: “Close connection with the community is the way to ensure targeted, effective intervention and, for this, social work must be community oriented.”

21 GIST DIVIDE AND CONQUER!

22 You should now be able to…..
