Reuben Land – Asthmatic who was miraculously saved by his father at birth. He has much respect and admiration for his father. Sees himself as a child and often compares himself to his older brother. Naïve to how the world works.
Jeremiah Land – Very religious and dedicated man. Mysterious to those around him because of his faith. Speaks with God and is the worker of miracles.
Swede – Innocent and the youngest of the Lands. An excellent writer of poetry and has developed a epic narrative about good vs. evil.
Davy – Grown up and mature for a 16 year old. Doesn’t seem to be his age. A man as far as Reuben is concerned.
Tommy Basca and Isreal Finch – Town bullies who seem to have evil intentions.

4. Author’s Purpose: Enger introduces us to the character’s during Reuben’s birth because he wants us to see that Jeremiah is a miracle worker. He wants us to understand his faith. We also get to meet the Land’s family friends, the Schultzs, maybe they are important? He also takes us there so we can see the great distance between Rueben and his older brother. Only five years apart, they seem much farther. He gives us the inciting incident of Dolly’s encounter with Tommy and Israel so Davy will want revenge. The tarring of the door lets us know the encounter with them is not over and reaffirms Dad’s faith in God. Swede and Davy are left at home when Dad and Reuben attend church so that we understand that decisions have consequences. The chapter ends with foreshadowing that something bad has taken place at home and it was Swede who is the recipient.
