Christian Living in a Hostile World
Theme Christian Living in a Hostile World

Schreiner The opening greeting in 1 Peter is hardly a customary hello. It is theologically rich and densely packed with themes.

Henry This epistle is addressed to believers in general, who are strangers in every city or country where they live, and are scattered through the nations. These are to ascribe their salvation to the electing love of the Father, the redemption of the Son, and the sanctification of the Holy Ghost;

Henry and so to give glory to one God in three Persons, into whose name they had been baptized.

Pink I am going to speak tonight on one of the most hated doctrines of the Bible, namely, that of God’s sovereign election. God’s sovereign election is the truth most loathed and reviled by the majority of those claiming to be believers. Let it be plainly announced that salvation originated not in the will of…

Pink man, but in the will of God, that were it not so none would or could be saved—for as the result of the fall man has lost all desire and will unto that which is good—and that even the elect themselves have to be made willing, and loud will be the cries of indignation raised against such teaching.

Lenski Aliens are often held in contempt by the natives among whom they dwell.

This world is not my home
I'm just a passing through My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue The angels beckon me from heaven's open door And I can't feel at home in this world anymore

Diognetus They inhabit the lands of their birth, but as temporary residents of it; they take their share of all responsibilities as citizens, and endure all disabilities as aliens. Every foreign land is their native land, and every native land a foreign land they pass their days upon earth, but their citizenship is in heaven.

Philippians 3:20-21 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

2 Timothy 1:9 …who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace

Titus 3:5 …he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit

'Tis not that I did choose thee, For, Lord, that could not be; This heart would still refuse thee, Hadst thou not chosen me. Thou from the sin that stained me Hast cleansed and set me free; Of old thou hast ordained me, That I should live to thee.

'Twas sovereign mercy called me And taught my op'ning mind; The world had else enthralled me, To heavenly glories blind. My heart owns none before thee, For thy rich grace I thirst; This knowing, if I love thee, Thou must have loved me first.

1 Peter 1:20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you

Acts 2:23 Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.

Jeremiah 1:5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.

Amos 3:2 You only have I known of all the families of the earth…

Matthew 7:23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

1 Peter 2:9-10 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Begg Our salvation… God the Father planned it God the Son procured it
God the Spirit applied it to my life
