1 Welcome to AP Stats!

2 The AP Exam Thursday, May17, This is during the second week of AP testing and about 4 weeks after Spring Break. The TEST: 3 hours Multiple Choice Questions, 5 Free-Response Questions, 1 “Investigative Task” Note: NO penalty for guessing!! You CAN be successful on this exam ONLY IF you put forth the effort ALL YEAR LONG. I will provide you with LOTS of preparation materials as well as insight on the grading of the exam.

3 What do you Need? You will need the following items for this course:
Graphing Calculator - Required (TI83or84+ recommended) Notebook - 2 or 3 subject, college-ruled Folder for tables, handouts, notes, & reading guides etc. Pencil, pen, highlighter Strong work ethic and a willingness to ask for help!

4 Your Textbook “The Practice of Statistics, 5e”
by Starnes, Tabor, Yates, & Moore Available as hard copy and e-book (through Launchpad) Complete the New Student Registration with your given access code

Launchpad contains tutorials, videos, worked out solutions to selected problems and plenty of practice as well as FRAPPY examples. My hope is you will be successful in the course and earn a passing score on the AP Exam. My expectation is that you will put forth the effort necessary to be successful in a college-level course. 17 Data Analysis Statistics is the science of data. Data Analysis is the process of organizing, displaying, summarizing, and asking questions about data. Individuals objects described by a set of data Variable any characteristic of an individual Categorical Variable places an individual into one of several groups or categories. Quantitative Variable takes numerical values for which it makes sense to find an average.

A dataset contains information on individuals. For each individual, data give values for one or more variables. Variables can be categorical or quantitative. The distribution of a variable describes what values it takes and how often it takes them. Inference is the process of making a conclusion about a population based on a sample set of data.
