3. What is a Pediatrician?
General pediatricians are doctors who work with babies, children and adolescents. Pediatric physicians must have general medical knowledge and an understanding of how treatments affect different developmental growth stages.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
A general pediatrician must track and administer immunizations on schedule.
Examine children regularly to assess their growth and development.
Collect, record, and maintain patient information, such as medical history, reports, and examination results.
Conduct research and test medications or procedures to prevent a disease or injury.

4. About my future career
Where is this job done? – Pediatricians can work in a number of environments, such as hospitals, private practice offices, health maintenance organizations, community health centers, public health clinics, or schools.
What is the salary range for this job? – The salary range of a pediatrician in Canada may range from $194,596 - $267,266. This depends on your work experience and your employment location.
What are the usual hours for this job? – The average pediatrician works approximately 50 hours per week, this includes time spent in the office, visiting patients in the hospital, doing paperwork and being on call after-hours. Office hours usually begin at 8:30 or 9:00 am and continue until 4:00 or 5:00 pm, with 1 to 1 1/2 hours for lunch.

I believe that my job has a very low chance of becoming automated because it's ranked high in cleverness, and helping others. It contains a lot of problem solving and critical thinking skills in order to make educated decisions, necessary for patient treatment plans.
This job is also involves a lot of human interaction and negotiation between the patients, their parents and other practitioners who are assigned this case.

6. A Pediatrician would be great for me because…
These are some of the skills that I have already acquired:
Good Communication Skills – A pediatrician must be able to communicate with both children and adults. A good pediatrician asks questions clearly and simply, then listens to the way the child answers. The pediatrician must be able to speak on a child's level to the patient, and on an adult level to the parent.
Problem Solving Abilities – Although pediatricians treat certain common illnesses repeatedly, they must view each patient visit as a new puzzle to solve and realize that every child reacts to illness differently. They must be able gather data and analyze it thoroughly.

7. I am not quite ready for this career, but I will get there!

Patience – Patience is a very important skill for a pediatrician to have since it takes an extra level of understanding when working with children.
I will try to spend more time volunteering at local community babysitting center and develop my patience and communication skills with little children.
Active Listening - Pediatricians are also very active listeners since it is necessary for them to collect all the medical history about the patient.
I will gain this skill by making sure to always be attentive and developing good listening skills.

8. This is what appeals to me with this career…
High Salary – Pediatricians a very well paid, which is important since they often have high amounts of college debt to pay off. The average Pediatrician salary is $189,090 per year or $97 per hour. Entry level positions start at $132,000 while most experienced workers make up to $265,000.
Helping Children – If you have a fondness for children, you can play a major role in helping them live long, healthy lives. Pediatricians in office settings usually get a chance to build bonds with kids and their parents through routine wellness visits during the first few years of life.
Flexible Career Options – With a specialized medical degree in pediatrics, you have many options in the type of work environment you want. Pediatricians can choose to work in general pediatrics or specialize in areas that treat more advanced child health issues, like surgery, cardiology and neurology.

9. These are some things I find less appealing about this career…
Nights and Weekends – Although some pediatricians are able to maintain relatively normal working hours, many small-town pediatricians are on call for emergencies while others work in rotations that include night, evening, weekend and holiday shifts. This often causes the work and family life balance to be compromised.
Added Pressure – Pediatricians have added pressure as a result of working with young patients and trying to satisfy their parents. Additionally, since pediatricians normally care strongly for their young patients, they take on the personal stress of wanting to help.
Expensive Studies – Pediatricians often have large amounts of money that they have to pay back due to the extensive amounts of schooling they are require to receive.

10. Potential obstacles to getting this career
The possible obstacles:
My plan to overcome them:
Very expensive – The schooling process which is required to become a doctor is very expensive. This may cause me to take out massive student loans.
I will begin saving up for post secondary education by creating savings accounts, working at a part-time job and applying for multiple scholarships.
Stressful and exhausting – Getting your undergraduate degree and going to medical school can become very stressful with the intense academic programs.
I will try to maintain a healthy balance between family and school. I will make sure to always get enough sleep and become more organized in my school work to eliminate stress.
Not accepted into preferred school – When applying into my school of preference I might be rejected.
When I am applying I will make sure to meet all the admission requirements. I will also apply to more schools than necessary to ensure that I have a choice to which school I go to.

11. Potential obstacles to being successful within this career

My plan to overcome them:
Medical malpractice suits – Unfortunately medical malpractice lawsuits have been quite common. Not only can they affects patients but also damage a doctor’s reputation.
I will always make sure to consult my patients about all the treatment options and use critical thinking skills when assessing each situation. I will also work on my communication skills to ensure there are no misunderstandings.
Time consumption – Being a pediatrician is very time consuming and it may become very difficult to create a healthy balance between family and work.
I will make sure that I am not compromising my relationships for work and maintain a healthy balance.
Job-related stress – Being a pediatrician may become very stressful when trying to decide between best treatment options and managing all the paperwork.
I will always make sure that I am satisfied with my career and take vacations when I begin feeling overwhelmed.

Scholarships – During my grade 11 and 12 years I will try to apply for as many academic scholarships as possible. I will make sure to keep myself updated to any possible opportunities available at the Career Center.
Financial Savings- Throughout high school and university I will try to maintain a part-time job which will help me pay for my education.
Registered Educations Savings Plan – My parents have created an educations savings plan which will hopefully get me through the first year of my post-secondary.

While medical schools might not look at high school transcripts as a determining factor for admission, solid coursework while in high school can prepare candidates for college-level pre-med studies. High school students who are interest in pursuing a career in medicine are advised take advanced placement courses in math and science-related subjects. A strong science background helps, but high school students should also have a well-rounded schedule of classes that includes the humanities, history, English and communications.

18. Pediatricians are awesome!!!
The first pediatric hospital opened in Paris, France, in Hospitals also began to add pediatric wings to already existing hospitals, including Charite in Berlin, Saint Petersburg in 1834, and Britain's Hospital for Sick Children in 1852.
The largest hospital and research facility in pediatrics is Boston Children's Hospital. Toronto's pediatric hospital is the second largest.
Most pediatricians care for their patients until they no longer need parental consent, however some will continue until a child reaches the age of 21.
