Nebraska THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering. BY THE NUMBERS Nebraska in FY 2016 $31 million: NSF funds awarded 9: NSF-funded institutions 94: NSF grants awarded 1: NSF research centers/facilities “[The] investments Congress makes in university research like areas of agriculture, medicine and national security keep our country on the forefront of discovery..” − Dr. Hank Bounds, President, University of Nebraska EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN NEBRASKA Researchers at the University of Nebraska Lincoln are studying the production of triglycerides in algae and the environmental factors that affect fat accumulation. Their research is leading to improved methods for producing algal fat, which can be converted to biofuels. A collaborative effort led by the University of Nebraska has resulted in a technique that measures how polarized light refracts off of a new class of materials. This sensing method can potentially help detect cancer, viruses, and drugs because it identifies a wide range of substances with precision and sensitivity. Through a scientific drilling program called ANDRILL, Nebraska researchers are investigating Antarctica's role in global climate change over the last sixty million years. Geophysical surveys, new drilling technology, and ice sheet modeling are being employed to study the history of Antarctica's climate and ice sheets. Nebraska Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. Nebraska received $7 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN NEBRASKA Doane College's Sustaining Undergraduate Classroom and Career Excellence for STEM Students (SUCCESS) Project awards scholarships to 24 academically talented students to increase enrollment in STEM majors, connect students to local STEM industries, and address Nebraska's need for a highly qualified STEM workforce. The SECURE-IT Cybersecurity Project at the Southeast Community College aims to strengthen the recruitment and retention of students in information technology (IT) by adapting and implementing cybersecurity curricula and providing professional development in cybersecurity for educators and industry professionals. The University of Nebraska State Museum's Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology (HWML) collaborate with educators to organize week-long summer classes for middle-school students where they learn about parasite taxonomy and biodiversity, as well as museum collections and their role in research.
