Is Anger Bad or OK? Matthew 5: 21-22
“In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. 4But Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast…

6Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it. ” 8Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.” Genesis 4: 3-8

Saul’s anger flared up at Jonathan and he said to him, “You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Don’t I know that you have sided with the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of the mother who bore you? 31 As long as the son of Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your kingdom will be established. Now send and bring him to me, for he must die!”

32 “Why should he be put to death? What has he done?” Jonathan asked his father. 33 But Saul hurled his spear at him to kill him. Then Jonathan knew that his father intended to kill David. 34 Jonathan got up from the table in fierce anger; on that second day of the month he did not eat, because he was grieved at his father’s shameful treatment of David.”

True stories, is anger a sin? Resulted in first murder... Attempted murder... Righteous anger at sin, not at a person. Anger left Cain and Saul unable to control their behavior, which was sinful. Now in Jesus sermon, he refers to the 6th commandment – no murder! Very accurate choice of word!

“But I say...” Jesus taught with authority, Matthew 7: 28-29, “When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.” Sounded like commandment when he said “anyone who is angry with his brother without cause will be subject to judgment.”
