DNA profiling is the process of using DNA to identify an individual.
It is also referred to as:
DNA fingerprinting
DNA typing
Genetic fingerprinting.

4. 1. Criminal forensics DNA profiling
It is a technique used by police to capture criminals and eliminate innocent suspects from suspicion.
The DNA is collected from the suspect and then compared against the DNA collected from the crime scene.

It reduces the number of wrongful criminal convictions.
Crimes from long ago can be solved if evidence is still available.
It can eliminate innocent suspects of a crime
Is it a risk?
If a sample has been taken from the scene of a crime, it may have been contaminated and wrongful convictions may occur.

It is possible to identify whether a man is the father of a child by comparing the DNA of the child with that of the man.

It can prove who is / is not the father of a child.

8. Assessing Future Health Risks:
Angelina Jolie has a family history of breast and ovarian cancer.
In 2012 she chose to have her DNA analysed to find out if she carries the faulty genes that would increase her chances developing the illness in the future.
She told her story in an article called “My Medical Choice” in The New York Times, (Published: May 14, 2013) after she had undergone treatment.
“My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman.”

Is it useful?
If a person does have a particular disease and they find out, it allows them to get treatment earlier.
Is it a risk?
The DNA profile may show that a person is more likely to suffer from a particular disease. This may stop them from gaining a job or health insurance.

Some people feel that they have the right to privacy and that giving a DNA sample is an invasion of their privacy – there are already close to 5 million people on the DNA database.
There is a concern that other agencies would have access to the DNA of an individual.
It is much easier than taking a blood sample.
