1. Year Two Maths Trip to Southend-On-Sea
In maths, we have been looking at using maths in the ‘real world’. As part of this the children have been making mathematical decisions around planning a trip to the seaside.
Maths Trip Action list:
Decide where and when to go.
Decide how to get there.
Calculate how much it will cost.
Decide on ways to raise the funds.
Plan activities for the day.
Evaluate the day’s outcomes to help other classes plan a trip.
We looked at and discussed what we would need to look at for planning a trip and came up with our actions list.

2. We looked at maps of the UK and identified the coastal towns.

We calculated the distances and times it would take to travel there using google maps.
We have decided to go to Southend-on-Sea as it was the closest town with an RLNI station.

3. How will we travel there?
We answered some key questions by researching different coach companies, the different coach sizes, seating capacity as well as the prices.

How will we get everyone on a coach for a good price? How much will each child need to raise?

4. How will we fit all the activities in our day?
We worked out the schedule for the day to make sure we would have enough time to play on the beach.
We calculated the time intervals using our teaching clocks.

5. How will we pay for it?
We looked at the pricing and added up the coach cost, little train to the end of the pier cost and … of course the cost of an ice-cream!
We calculated that each child had to pay £15 but then found out that the PTA had raised enough money to pay for our coach (Wooooo hooooo!)
This then meant we only needed to pay £5.
Did you know the RNLI is charity funded and depends solely on donations? I made a fundraising box and poster to help raise money for them.
They were very grateful for our donations!
