3 GUIDELINES FOR THE ACADEMY OF MECHANICAL AND AEROSPACE ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIPS JANUARY 2016
The Academy of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineers will award nine (9) AMAE scholarships at the level of $1,000 each, and one (1) McGovern scholarship at $2,000 for a total of $11,000. The AMAE Past Presidents have also funded an additional $2,000 scholarship. The AMAE Scholarship Cmte will make a recommendation for this award. Awards are specifically for students in the MAE Department at the Missouri University of Science & Technology. Successful applicants will have demonstrated that they are likely to become leaders in their careers because of the leadership they demonstrate as a student. Following are the guidelines and procedures for awarding these scholarships. 1. The TARGET distribution for the nine annual scholarships will be as follows: Two (2) to sophomores, three (3) to juniors, and four (4) to seniors; however, the actual awards will be based on the best candidates irrespective of class. Prior recipients may reapply, regardless of the year. 2. Notice of awards will be made in May, but the funds will be distributed equally for each semester ($500 or $1,000 for the fall semester and $500 or $1,000 for winter semester). 3. To qualify for this scholarship, the student must demonstrate leadership through involvement in meaningful campus organized extracurricular activities, including varsity athletics. Activities within or sponsored by the MAE Department are given greater consideration. US Citizenship is required. 4. Priority will be given to students who demonstrate the potential to be good engineers, however, a greater financial need will be used as a final tiebreaker when the other criteria are relatively equal. 5. While the Academy believes that GPA is an indication of scholarly achievement, it is not necessarily an indication of the contribution that an engineering student will make in their career. Therefore, the Academy will consider GPA as a subordinate characteristic to leadership and extracurricular activities. 6. While minority status is not a prime consideration, diversity among recipients will be sought from among applicants who have equal qualifications. 7. Candidates must complete an application form that must include an academic transcript and a resume, along with a one-page essay describing their accomplishments and experiences along with a statement describing why they feel they should receive this scholarship. The application process is opened on February 1st and applications must be submitted on or before March 1st. 8. The MAE Departmental Scholarship Committee will collect and screen applications and forward their recommendations to the Chair of the AMAE Scholarship Committee. Members of the AMAE Scholarship Committee will select and award these scholarships after receiving and considering recommendations from the MAE Departmental Scholarship Committee.
