Current EAP courses The GATEWAY course in CEP 10 weeks EAP 1; 10 weeks EAP 2 30 week programme at B2 on the CEFR (Common European Framework) Progressive curriculum delivered over 10 weeks. 5 week A module and 5 week B module Each week is a self contained module. Order doesn’t matter. 5 units (6 weeks each) Skills- based curriculum tied to traditional grammatical syllabus. Task- based curriculum focusing on “can do’ and tied to CEFR. Skills and language developed through real tasks

7 The GATEWAY course in CEP
Current EAP courses The GATEWAY course in CEP You study English for Academic Purposes (EAP1/EAP2) You will study English for university studies, work and life here. EAP comes later 10 weeks for half an IELTS band 12 weeks for half an IELTS band If you fail, you repeat a module, so you study the SAME material If you need to extend your studies, the material is DIFFERENT

8 The GATEWAY course in CEP Crowded curriculum
Current EAP courses The GATEWAY course in CEP Crowded curriculum Space for individualisation Not enough time for speaking and writing in class. Language is presented as per the syllabus More speaking lessons; more writing practice and more language review based on needs Heavy focus on formal assessment every module; reducing learning time Better balance between formal and informal assessment. Testing online, out of class time, and assessment of in class tasks

9 The GATEWAY course in CEP Summative assessments every 5 weeks
Current EAP courses The GATEWAY course in CEP Summative assessments every 5 weeks Lots of formative assessments. Summative assessment at the end of the course, not every module You are tested on language and content of your course You are assessed on tasks you ‘CAN DO’ in English

15 Curtin University campus Partner City Campus
For students who need more English – Changes in campus model Benefits: Experience a more relaxed learning environment at lower levels before transitioning to academic type university environment Better nationality mix at the lower levels Curtin University campus Partner City Campus Half IELTS band= 10 weeks IELTS 5.0 ELB Benefits of the mixed campus model: Experience a more relaxed learning environment before transition to academic university life Students starting at the lower level will not feel as stressed learning in a casual environment. Able to slowly make the mental transition to a more academic environment as they progress in their language skills. Better nationality mix Currently, most students in our lower level classes are from similar regions. Our students will be integrated into the current cohort of students at the partner city campus – increasing diversity in the classroom will enhance the learning experience while not compromising on teaching quality. 12 weeks 17 weeks 12 weeks 12 weeks 17 weeks

16 Improvements in curriculum
Improvements in curriculum Quality ensured - closer alignment with CEFR Introduction of electives Better prepared for progression exams Improvements in curriculum Entire CEP curriculum is now task based General English whereas previously, students were pre-maturely (?) introduced to academic English. Quality ensured We ensure the quality of teaching does not change with the introduction of dual campus model. Important to note that we are not outsourcing the delivery to a private provider. The new curriculum also aligns itself with the Common European Framework Reference (CEFR) which is globally recognised as the standard for language proficiency. Introduction of electives/streams We have introduced electives/streams in the CEP. Students can choose between …. Better prepared for progression exams Introduction of mock test in week 6 of each level will help students and teachers gauge progress. Students will have to complete weekly assignments and milestones before week 12. Each student’s progress will be logged in a portfolio. This encourages independent learning and allows the teachers to address any issues before the final exam.

17 Why are we extending the duration from 10 to 12 weeks?
FAQs: Why are we extending the duration from 10 to 12 weeks? At the higher level of IELTS 5.0 and 5.5, research by ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe) among others has shown that students require a longer time to progress a band. Extending each level by 2 weeks reduces the stress level that our current EAP students face. This will better prepare students for success in their Curtin College and ELB programs What if a student doesn’t meet their entry requirement? Success rates will increase with the improved CEP curriculum and the extra time allocated. If a student progresses more slowly, they will have to extend by 6 weeks. We have created an extra 6 weeks of materials in the new curriculum so they will study fresh material at the B2 level.

18 What happens to the application/admissions process?
FAQs: Are students considered Curtin students even if they are at the partner campus? Yes, from Day 1, all students will be treated as Curtin students and will receive the ID card plus all benefits of being a student at Bentley. What happens to the application/admissions process? Business as usual. Any changes to commission rates? No. Are students allowed to stay at the partner city campus for the entire duration? No, once they have completed their studies at the partner city campus, they will have to transition to the Bentley campus.
