The following activity will explore the concepts of colonization, salutary neglect, government power (where does it come from?), popular sovereignty, and democracy.

3. Welcome to Mars Your class has been selected to colonize Mars.
Once on Mars, the United States government will be adopting a policy of “salutary neglect”. This means that they are leaving us to govern ourselves.
We will have to come up with our own rules.

The people give government permission to be in charge in return for protection.
