Chapter 15 Section 3 -metals are made up of closely packed cations surrounded by a sea of valence electrons metallic bonds- consist of the attraction of free-floating valence e- for the + charged metal ions -page 427 figure these bonds are what holds metals together

This model explains physical properties of metals:
good conductors of electricity ductile (drawn into wires) malleable (hammered into shapes) shiny *compare to ionic crystals- if hammered will shatter

-Metals are also arranged in crystal patterns -page 428- three different types *most metallic objects we use are rarely pure metal alloy- mixture composed of two or more elements, at least one of which is a metal *important b/c their properties are often superior to those of their main elements -page 429 table 15.3
