Republicans Origins Abraham Lincoln elected as the 1st Republican President in 1860 They opposed slavery, supported business, and were popular only in the North Democrats Origins Emerged as a major political party in 1932 with the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt His New Deal programs were designed to bring the country out of economic depression.

2 Kinds of Direct Primary
Closed Primary A voter must be registered as a party member and can vote only in that party’s primary Ex: You must be a registered Republican to vote for the Republican Representative Open Primary Voters to not have to declare a party before voting, but they can only vote in one party’s primary
