Proactive Transmitter Service & Support Strategies Kevin T. Rodgers, P. Eng., CPBE, CBNT Director of Customer Service 1

2 Objective is to prevent loss of broadcasting revenue
Caused by: Reduced or Off Air situations “offense is the best defense”

3 Threats at a Transmitter site
Lightning Power Line Transients Arcing Cooling equipment malfunctions Maintenance / Repair activities Rodents Engineering Oversight Routine failures

4 Smart Transmitters Are able to know much more information
The amount of information available on the control panel (remote or local) of a modern transmitter was inconceivable a few years ago.

5 Smart Transmitters Are able to know much more information For example
We now know the exact power level of the transmitter Not only the output air temperature of the transmitter but the heatsink temperature of critical components fan speed of every fan. Voltage levels

6 Internet Access Internet usage is growing exponentially around the world. Makes perfect sense for equipment manufacturers to include Internet access. Modern Broadcast transmitters, STLs, EAS equipment, test equipment, generator sets and UPS all have the ability to be interrogated over the internet. Provides for remote diagnostics, instant reporting, and notification of things that aren’t problems yet but need your attention. Therefore Internet access at your transmitter site is a valuable investment.

7 Advanced User Interface (AUI) in today's transmitter
Sophisticated tool available via TCP/IP Alarm via Ability to diagnose problems Reset alarms Can determine what module, power supply, fan or what part of the transmitter is having an issue.

8 Advanced user interface(AUI)
Can go to the site prepared to actually deal with the problem – on the first visit! Improved monitoring and diagnosis results in less lost airtime and a reduction in engineering time. What you cannot reset over the internet, you can at least determine what module, power supply, fan, fuse or other part of the transmitter is having the issue.

9 A real world example It's amazing!  I had a problem with the NX-50s VSWR protection system.  I arranged for Nautel tech support to get VPN access to the transmitter while it was on the air and they found the problem quickly.  Then they told me what to adjust and the problem went away.  This is a paradigm shift if ever there was one! - KRLD  - Erik Disen
