Seatbelt Law Motorists with GDL license or permit must use seatbelts as well as require all passengers to wear them Seatbelts prevent: Stop from being thrown from vehicle Slow the body down with the vehicle Keep a motorist from sliding on the seat

Seatbelts & Car Seats Use both lap & shoulder belts
Child Restraint Law: Children up to age 8 or weigh 80 lbs. must ride in a safety or booster in the rear seat If there is no rear seat the child must sit in the front seat secured Failure to comply = $54 fine and court costs

Air Bags Air bags inflate at speeds up to 200 mph!

Snow and Ice State Law – you must clear off all snow and ice from your vehicle before driving it Penalty for not doing so equals fines of $25-$75

Blind Spot Areas around your vehicle unable to be seen by using mirrors. Need to turn and look over shoulder to check your blind spot.

Idling your Vehicle Idling more than 3 minutes is unnecessary and harmful to your vehicle and your health Fines of $250-$1,000

Stopping Distances Total Stopping Distance = Reaction Time + Breaking Distance Reaction time, weather, weight, brake/wheel condition, roadway conditions, and speed all effect stopping distances Driving at 60 mph the Braking Distance is 300 ft

Steering Hand position: 9:00 & 3:00
Relaxed and comfortable Tracking: aim far ahead of intended path

Steering: Turning Hand over Hand Hand to Hand / Push Pull Slide

Steering: Straightening Out
Oversteer: turning the wheel too much Understeer: not turning the wheel enough

Turning the Vehicle Around
Turnabout: maneuver for turning your car around U-Turn: make sure it is legal Forward then Reverse Signal to turn in driveway Pull in so wheels are off road Reverse & cut direction you want the back of car to go

Reverse then forward: Drive past driveway & signal Reverse by cutting the wheel towards the driveway Shift back into drive & pull back out in the direction you want to go

3 Point Turn/K Turn Pull to the right of the road Turn wheel left & drive to other side of road Shift into reverse and cut the wheel right Shift into drive and pull onto your side of the road

Driving Signals Motorists should signal 100 ft before a turn

Driving in Reverse Body is turned to the right
Right hand behind passenger seat Left hand at 12 o’clock on the wheel to go straight Turn the wheel in the direction you want the back of the car to go

Parking on Hills Downhill Uphill Always to the RIGHT
Always turned AWAY FROM THE CURB (LEFT) No curb, to the RIGHT
