Innovations Camp A16 NORMAL BRAINSTORM One of the most known creative tools is brainstorming. It is a tool that can be used at once - however, it rarely brings up new creative ideas. The tool can be used if you want many ideas which are realistic in connection with the problem – or it can be used with other tools - as an ”empty your head” can be used as inspiration for alternative tools.. Purpose: Get as many ideas as possible. Procedure: Choose a moderator. Start by writing your focus question on a piece of paper and place it so everyone in the group we can see it. To get as many ideas as possible - in writing – set in relation to the focus question. It is NOT allowed to comment ideas/ suggestions. Write the many ideas in the ”Bank of great ideas” for a later purpose. Rules The following rules are meant to help you in the process: SAY: YES AND – DON´T SAY; NO BUT Quantity above quality. (We are trying to get as many ideas as possible – good or bad. It is a collective process and one of your ideas can be someone else´s inspiration to another – perhaps - good idea.) 3. Stay focused (It is important to focus on the question – this is where the moderator steps up.) Materials: Post-its Paper Time: min. VIA University College

Innovations Camp A16 CAMP FIRE Purpose: To get as many ideas as possible Procedure Choose a moderator The group chooses a focus question that is essential for the challenge. The focus question is written on a piece of paper and placed on the floor or a table (to illustrate a fire) so everyone can see. ”Time on your own” minutes (individually) Every person writes down her/ his ideas on a piece of paper (one idea on one piece of paper) All ideas are placed one by one around the focus question (”firewood is brought to the camp fire”) The ideas are organized by subject and a headline is made for each subject. All the ideas are placed in the ”Bank of great ideas” Rules The following rules are meant to help you in the process: 1. SAY: YES AND – DON´T SAY NO BUT... 2. Quantity above quality.. (We are trying to get as many ideas as possible good or bad. It is a collective process and one of your ideas can be some else´s inspiration to another – perhaps – good idea. 3. STAY FOCUS (It is important to stay focused on the question– this is where the moderator steps up) Materialer: Post-its FLIPOVER Time The process takes app one hour VIA University College

Innovations Camp A16 REVERSE BRAINSTORM Reverse brainstorm is a development of a normal brainstorm. Reverse brainstorm is often used when there is a need of an extra push to get going . The result of this technique is that you often become many new ideas. Quite many of us are better at finding negative than positive ideas.. Purpose: The purpose of the tool is to create as many ideas/ solutions as possible to solve the chosen challenge, Procedure: Start by writing your focus question on a piece of paper so every one can see.. Rephrase the focus question, so it turns out to be the opposit of what you have written on your focus question. ( i,e, at the dentist "How do we improve patient satisfaction?"? The question is rephrased to; "How do we make patients more dissatisfied?") Your job is now to generate ideas focusing on the negative problem statement. Place the negative focus question on the table so everyone can see. You have to com up with ideas / solutions solving the negative focus question. Remember YES AND to generate ideas on other ideas. The negative ideas are now used to create positive oppostits, which can answer the positive problem statement. This is done by going through all the negative ideas one by one and then write the positive ideas based on the negative idea on a POST-IT. Hold back critisim and evaluation. You end this technique by concluding, mixing and combining ideas to be placed in the ”BANK of great ideas”. Materialer: Post-its FLIPOVER Time: 45-60 min VIA University College

Innovations Camp A16 PERSONAS This is a good technique if there is a need of more perspective, views on an assignment. The technique often gives many complete new ideas, that you had not thought about when the creative process began. It is a good technique if you are more with the same pre-understanding about the assignment is solved.. Purpose: The purpose of the tool is to help you find new ideas/ solutions to the chosen challange.. Procedure: Start by writing your focus question on a piece of paper and place it so everyone can see. You have to choose some roles (min three) who does not have any relation to the challange. i.e an astronaut, a circus manager, a tightrope artist i.e. It could also be person with a certain personality / agenda. Donald Trump, Jamie Oliver, or David Beckham. Or other celebs with an attitude. Try to imagine the different personas thought about how to solve your challange. Choos one persona when you can not come up with more ideas go to persona number 2, and then persona number 3. Remember to write down all the ideas and solutions – visuable to all.. You end this technique by concluding, mixing and combining ideas/ solutions to be placed in the ”Bank of great ideas”. Materials: Paper Time 30-45 min VIA University College

InnovationsCamp A16 CATEGORIZATION AND ASSESSMENT OF IDEAS When the ”BANK of great ideas” holds as many great ideas as possible it is an option to categorize and assess/ evaluate the ideas Purpose: To help the group categorize the ideas and create an overview of the ideas and at the same time make an assessment of how realistic and innovative the ideas are.. Procedure: This test can be used after each brainstorming exercise or after a series of brainstorming exercises.. The group is looking for connections between the many ideas and a natural division of ideas into categories.. The different categories are each given a headline. The group shortly describes what each category/ headline is covering. The group discusses which category/ headline the want to pursue.. The group are able to define the most innovative and most realistic ideas using the graph below. The ones with the combined highest score can be used in the “Catalogue of great ideas”,.
