1 If you see it don’t support it! RECOGNISE IT, REJECT IT, REPORT IT!
School Crest Here School Name Here Anti-Bullying Campaign BULLYING IS DELIBERATE, REPEATED HURTFUL BEHAVIOUR If you see it don’t support it! RECOGNISE IT, REJECT IT, REPORT IT! 1

BULLYING is (a) Deliberate, (b) Repeated (c) Hurtful Behaviour e.g. Unwelcome glances, sniggering, negative remarks, name calling . . . Slagging/teasing about appearance, ability, background, family . . . Spreading rumours about someone among your friends or theirs Making/sending abusive telephone calls or text messages Putting unwelcome comments/messages/pictures on Internet sites Isolation/exclusion from group or from group activity Intimidation, whether verbal or through tone or body language Physical aggression - pushing, tripping, hitting, punching . . . Damage to property, interfering with property or taking property Extortion of money or property, whether using threats or not If any selection of these happens repeatedly to a fellow-student, whatever else you might call it, s/he is being bullied. S/he may try to conceal the hurt by laughing but don’t be fooled! It is still bullying, it still hurts and it must be stopped!

3 Anti-Bullying Campaign Where & When Does This Bullying Happen?
School Crest Here School Name Here Anti-Bullying Campaign Where & When Does This Bullying Happen? In class, where it is often very subtle, sly and calculated, especially at moments when the teacher is busy. Between classes, hidden by moving students on corridors if classes move, in classroom when teachers leave the room if teachers move. In the toilets, locker areas or changing rooms, where staff presence may necessarily be limited for child protection reasons. The playground - most physical bullying takes place here, hidden by noise and movement of students at breaks or after school. Outside the school, at local shops and in the neighbourhood. Bullying is usually secretive. It is hidden from teachers - or they are not there to see it repeated since they move from class to class. You see it so the targeted student may need You to Recognise it, to Reject it because of the damage it can do and then Report it.

Psychological Impact of Bullying: Feelings of insecurity, nervousness, being “on edge,” less trustful Damage to self-confidence, stops getting involved, becomes a loner Lowering of self-esteem, unhappiness with oneself, more self-critical Unexplained mood changes, mood swings, less relaxed and less happy Behaviour changes, becoming suddenly aggressive or cranky Stress/distress, inability to cope, lacking motivation, giving up Extreme anxiety/panic attacks, getting away, opting out, “mitching” Nervous breakdown, inability to function normally even at home Depression requiring psychiatric intervention, maybe hospitalisation Bullied students feel so hurt, humiliated and isolated that they find it hard to “admit” they are being bullied! This is usually why they need someone like you to report the bullying!

Students who bully sometimes do not understand that Bullying is (a) Deliberate (b) Repeated (c) Hurtful behaviour If all three aspects are not present together the behaviour may be unfair or mean but it is not bullying (e.g. a fight) If all three aspects are present together, even if each incident on its own seems minor the repetition of this behaviour makes it bullying Bullying is therefore very different from horseplay or “just messing” Bullying that seems fairly harmless can cause serious psychological damage - psychologists are now very concerned about its impact Bullying is very hurtful and upsetting for targeted students who often conceal the hurt and don’t report the bullying due to feelings of humiliation, isolation or embarrassment that they cannot stop it You are there all day. Once you can identify bullying by its three features and know how damaging it is to students, you can report it to teachers on their behalf so it can be stopped.

Could I be involved in bullying behaviour? Suppose I “pick on” or make fun of a fellow student in front of other students just once each day for a week . . . Or suppose someone else does and I laugh along . . . And suppose just five other students do so each day too . . . That student is bullied thirty times that week and is having an unhappy and miserable week . . . And if several others laugh along too it seems like “everyone” is at it and the bullied student is left feeling very isolated and alone all week . . . And may be trying really hard not to show it, hoping it might stop . . . And even though everyone has a right to equal respect - regardless of appearance, skin colour, size, academic ability, loudness, gentleness etc. etc. - that student is definitely not getting equal treatment . . . And I realise that I am one of those who is doing it . . . Deep down, I know what I should and should not do! 6

If I see others bullying a fellow student I have a number of options and a big responsibility Things I could do if I am aware of a bullying situation: Make sure I do not to join in the bullying behaviour Make sure I do not show support for the bullying by laughing along Make sure I do not avoid and so further isolate the targeted student Always treat the targeted student with respect even if I don’t like her/him - I don’t have to like everyone but I should still respect them With my friends present remind the bullying student(s) about how harmful bullying is - even when it seems to only involve “little things” Suggest that the bullying student(s) go and do something else, maybe with me and my friends, like shooting baskets, kicking football etc. As soon as I get a chance, report the bullying behaviour so a teacher can investigate it and then, if it continues deal with it If I do this I will help make the world a better place! 7

8 to make the world a better, safer place?
School Crest Here School Name Here Anti-Bullying Campaign Today is the first day of the rest of your entire life! Do you want to begin to make the world a better, safer place? Will you remember what you learned today? You can prove it . . . by how you treat each other from now on! 8
