These show how to go from one metric unit to another.
Metric Conversions These show how to go from one metric unit to another.
2
Types of units Base units – can be measured directly Derived – are gotten by a formula or mathematical operation.
3
There are 3 Systems 1. English System ex: inches, pounds, gallon
Metric system (need to know) – A. base units distance-meter (m) mass – grams (g) time – seconds (s) temperature – Kelvin (K) amount of substance (number of) – mole (mol) intensity of light – candela (cd) B. Common derived unit volume – liter (L)
4
International System The major difference for this class regarding units between the SI system and metric system is the unit for mass is kilogram (kg).
5
Metric Chart gram liter meter Mega Kilo hecto deca Base deci centi
gram liter meter Mega Kilo hecto deca Base deci centi milli micro nano M k h da d c m n
6
Example: Convert 1.00 meter to a kilometer.
1. Place the decimal of the given number (1.00 meter) at the place that matches the starting unit. Mega (M) micro (µ) Hecto (h) deka(da) nano (n) De`ci (d) milli (m) centi (c) Kilo (K) Base I M _ _ k h da B d c m _ _ µ 1.00
7
2. Find the prefix for the number that you want to convert it to.
M _ _ k h da B d c m _ _ µ 1.00
8
3. Count the number of places that you will need to move the decimal.
M _ _ k h da B d c m _ _ µ 1.00 So the final answer is .001 km.
9
Example 2: Convert 0.0003cm to km
M _ _ k h da B d c m _ _ µ Line up the decimal at the centi place.
10
Find the unit to convert to, (kilo in this example).
M _ _ k h da B d c m _ _ µ The decimal is moved 5 places to the left so that is what you do for the number. The answer is
11
Example 3: Convert 3.08g to µg.
M _ _ k h da B d c m _ _ µ 3.08
12
Find the prefix you are converting to.
M _ _ k h da B d c m _ _ µ 3.08 We then have to do that to the number. The final answer is µg.
13
Practice problems Convert the following: 400 meters to millimeters
5800 liters to hectoliters 6120 nanograms to milligrams centimeters to kilometers
14
Homework: Convert each to the unit given.
g to Kg hg to cg cm to meter cm to µm hg to g g to Mg dam to dm L to mL cm to m mL to hL Mm to Km mg to g µm to m KL to ML 8. 2,000,000 mm to km dL to L
