Preparer to mitigate the impact of a terrorist attack

3. The Prevent strategy is not new
Introduced in 2011 by the Government
Part of UK Counter-terrorism strategy CONTEST
Original aims:
Respond to the ideological challenge of terrorism and the threat we face from those who promote it;
Prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and ensure that they are given appropriate advice and support; and
Work with sectors and institutions where there are risks of radicalisation that we need to address.

4. What does Richmond School do?
We have established a single point of contact for Prevent (Designated child protection staff)
Assessed risk of students being drawn into terrorism
Developed an action plan to reduce the risk.
Trained staff to recognise radicalisation and extremism.
Refered vulnerable people to the usual safeguarding procedures
Prohibit extremist speakers and events
Manage access to extremist material
Teach a broad and balanced curriculum which promised the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development o pupils, including and promoting fundamental British values
Promote community cohesion

British Values are strongly linked to the universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948)
Human Rights Act (1998)
This is promoted and supported in assemblies, Religious Education, L4L, PE, History, English, Drama curriculum and our policies on bullying, behaviour and classroom expectations.

6. Community Cohesion
2006: Schools have a duty to ‘promote community cohesion’
2011: Removed the duty from Ofsted to inspect it, but the duty to promote is still there.
