Why Dual Language at bridgeport?
Approx. 50/50 English/Spanish in our school Stable, supportive community who are working together Data supports many of our learners need additional ways to access academic content Current & past research support this as the right programming for our students Strong need for bilingual (language), biliterate (academic), bicultural (multicultural competence) community Spanish Literacy has provided a base A changing world!! Makes our kids more competitive in the future – college and beyond! Neurological research is clearly showing exposure to a 2nd language creates brain changes that benefit learning. Both sides of the brain are used. Makes us more attractive

Courageous conversations
Purpose: Raise the achievement of all students Narrow the gap between highest and lowest performing students Eliminate the racial predictability of who is in those highest and lowest groups 4 Agreements: Stay engaged Experience discomfort Speak my truth Expect and accept non-closure

Long-term High Academic Achievement for All
Dr. Virginia Collier and Dr. Wayne Thomas after 2 decades of study including more than 2 million student records English language learners: 5-8 years of education are needed in their primary language to close the achievement gap with English-speaking students Students in bilingual programs: often do better in all academic subjects than native English speakers with no access to bilingual training Two-way programs are consistently the highest achieving schools in any district included in their studies
