1 Purpose of the Cell Cycle

2 Cell Growth and Division
Cell division occurs in all living organisms 2 Types of living organisms Prokaryotes-unicellular organisms Bacteria Eukaryotes- multicellular organisms Plants and animal

3 DNA and Chromosomes Genetic material of a cell contains information needed for the cell’s growth and other activities. Genetic material in cells is DNA. Deoxyribonucleic acid DNA is a chemical that contains information for an organisms growth and functions. It’s the blueprint of an organism. Found in the nucleus (center) of the cell

4 DNA and Chromosomes Chromosomes are a structure made of DNA.
Chromosomes are only visible during cell division.

5 Prokaryotes reproduce through cell division
Prokaryotes ( unicellular) organisms reproduce by cell division

6 Cell division in Eukaryotes
Eukaryotes use cell division for specific function in an organism. Cell division is involved in Growth- how an organism gets larger Development- makes specialized cells like nerve cells Repair- heals wounds and injuries Reproduction- creates sex cells for sexual reproduction.

7 Cells grow, develop and repair
Growth Large organisms has more cells Small organisms have less cells

8 Development Cells develop and become specialized to perform specific functions Skin Nerve Muscle Liver Can you think of more?

9 repair Cells help an organism body repair injury through cell division

10 Reproduce Cellular division allows cells to reproduce
Asexual reproduction Create an identical copy of itself. Example bacteria (prokaryotes) Cellular division create sex cells for organisms using sexual reproduction. Sexual Reproduction Create non-identical organisms Example: mammals
