Does British Columbia owe an apology to the non-British communities that settled in this province? (Primary evidence, ethical judgement) By Matthew Fenton

The komagata maru incident
The komagata maru incident ocorred in 1914 in coal harbour because the BC government made a law. The law stated that any incoming immigrants needed to enter BC by direct route which the komagata maru did not. The komagagta maru was not a direct route because they made a stop in Hong Kong for fuel.

1914 Komagata Maru incident
The ship had 350 Sikhs coming from India. They stayed on the ship in coal harbour for 2 months. That is 1/6 of a year. They survived on food from the south Asian population already in Vancouver. When the ship was sent back to India, 20 men were killed when they arrived back because they were seen as rebels after resisting the arrest. This picture is from,

Komagata maru Hear is a quote I found
VICTORIA - On May 23, 1914, a ship named the Komagata Maru entered Vancouver’s Burrard Inlet carrying 376 passengers from India who had hopes for a new life in Canada. After that long journey they were turned away and not allowed to enter the country. What made this event more tragic was that, upon their forced repatriation to India, 20 individuals were killed. What I think the quote is saying is it was a very tragic event that Canada did not accept the Sikhs when the government knows it will not end peacefully resulting in 20 deaths in India. the-komagata-maru

The 1855 Head tax The head tax was a tax directed against Chinese immigrants living in BC because their was a fear of Chinese immigrants taking away jobs from the British Colombians. British Colombians pressure the government to save their jobs. The government imposed a 50$ head tax on all Chinese immigrants coming into BC. Every few years the head tax would be increased in till they did not allow any more Chinese immigrants to BC.

Head tax The average wage of a Chinese person earned per year was 300$ but with all the expenses deducted from that 43$ would be an estimate of what they saved a year. To give you an idea that would be about 860 dollars in are current time.

Head tax the perspective of this painting is from the white people because it shows wealth for white people and poverty for Asian people. The steam ship shows more advancement in society than a old fashioned Asian sail ship. The way Asian eyes have been drawn in a cartoon way by the white people also supports this view. ybreaksouth/2014/01 /14/writing-a-public- government-apology/ By BC Saturday sunset news paper on august, 24, 1907

My opinion I feel that all people should be treated fairly and in these two cases Sikhs and Chinese have been discriminated against. I believe an apologize is owed to these people.
