Outreach NSF 12-month Review September 24-25, 2012
“We will carry out education and outreach to engage the scientific community and the public and reach the broadest possible audience.” NSF 12-month Review September 24-25, 2012
2
User Community Engagement
Approach – Phased expansion of scope Activities & Plans
3
Phased Expansion of Scope
Approach: Gather input from increasingly broad community as system evolves Rationale Relatively well-defined set of core functionality People provide better feedback when they have something to react to Don’t publicize “vaporware”
4
Phased Expansion of Scope
Executive Committee Initial Feature Set Partners & Collaborators Input during development process Use scenarios Development Community Feedback on work in progress Screencast, pre-prototype versions General Users Feedback on prototype Broad publicity
5
Phase 1 - Initial Feature Set
Interest in tightly integrated population and environment data Demand from existing MPC product users for expanded domains Complementary interest from environmental science community Defined core functions for proposed data access system Transformations across three data formats Based on MPC expertise with data integration and access systems Developed and documented at kick-off meeting (Sept. 2011) Establish proof-of-concept in prototype
6
Phase 1 - Initial Feature Set
User registration and authentication Metadata browsing Variable search and selection Merging and transformations across formats Output in multiple formats
7
Phase 2 – Partners and Collaborators
Expertise from additional domains Environmental science Human-environment interactions Digital data preservation Cyberinfrastructure Engagement in development process Monthly Scientific Leadership Group meetings Advisory Board meetings DataNet interactions
8
TerraPop Wiki Purpose Scope of Access
Share materials with partners outside MPC Discussion venue Scope of Access MPC staff TerraPop Scientific Leadership Group Partner organizations: IonE, CIESIN, ICPSR DataNet partners
9
Wiki Contents Shared materials Discussion and Collaboration
Planning: Planning documents, policies, meeting minutes Outreach: Presentations, publicity materials Reporting: Reports submitted to NSF Discussion and Collaboration On-going data and software discussions DataNet PI meeting materials Outreach ideas: venues, question bank
10
Use Scenario 1 Hypothesis: Health outcomes depend on local variations in the physical environment. Research objective: Demonstrate enhanced understanding of health outcomes related to both physical and social environmental conditions at sub-national levels. Study Area: Ghana, Malawi and Tanzania Source: MPC faculty affiliate
11
Use Scenario 1 Potential time saved by TerraPop: 25 hours Variables
Source Data Format Desired Data Format Temperature Raster Area-level (Districts) Rainfall Elevation Infant and child mortality Microdata Age structure Literacy Household access to toilet Potential time saved by TerraPop: 25 hours
12
Use Scenario 2 Goal: Identify common pathways of sustainability success, and of failure, in integrated human-natural water resource systems. Research objectives: Combine model-based water history for sub-basins with demographic information relating to irrigation and domestic water consumption. Compile a new data set of crop-specific irrigated area and water use. Conduct regional case studies on emerging conflicts between agricultural water use and urban water demand, and generalize case study observations based on demographic data. Study Area: Global Source: Global Landscapes Initiative
13
Use Scenario 2 Potential time saved by TerraPop:
Variables Source Data Format Desired Data Format Temperature, Precipitation Raster Raster or by water basin (non-administrative boundaries) Irrigated land Crop-based land use Population Microdata Labor force in agriculture Access to piped water Sewer service Household structure Potential time saved by TerraPop: Hundreds of hours. Plus potential availability of boundary data not available elsewhere.
14
Phase 2 - Refined Requirements
More detailed documentation Software scoping and development workplan Success metrics Reflect increasing information Input from partners and collaborators Lessons learned and decisions made Framework for prototype development
15
Phase 3 - Development Community
Defined set of interested users Existing users of MPC products Communities reached by partner organizations Solicit feedback on emerging products UI wireframe screencast Pre-prototype versions of data access system
16
Identifying the Development Community
Existing MPC Users Co-PIs Personal Networks Advisory Board Project Partners DataNet Partners Population-Environment Research Network Users’ Group
17
