Distributive Property
Says that multiplying a sum (or difference) by a number is the same as multiplying each number in the sum (or difference) by that number and adding (or subtracting) the products.
4
Example (top of page 157) 6 x 18 6 x (10 + 8)
Think of 18 as 6 x (10 + 8) Distribute the 6 to both the 10 and the 8: (6 x 10) + (6 x 8) YOU TRY: 4 x 24 Think of 24 as 4 x ( ) Distribute the 4 to both the 20 and the 4: (4 x 20) + (4 x 4) Solve: = 96
5
Guided Practice #1 12 x 308= 12 x ( ? + 8) 12 x 308= 12 x (300 +8)
2. Solve it: (12 x 300) = 3600 (12 x 8)= 96 = 3696
6
So how do I apply this? Try it on your own: 4 x 105
Break apart the 105 into Now distribute the 4: (4 x 100) +(4 x 5) Solve it: = 420 Do Problems #9-16 and we will review them

Order of Operations Definition:
It states that when using the order of operations, do the operations inside of the parentheses first. 12 / 4 + (9 - 2) x (3 + 5) 12 / x 8 Remember to rewrite the operations not yet performed. Then, you multiply and divide in order from left to right. 12 / x 8 = 59
9
How do I apply this? Guided Practice: name the operation you should do first. 6 + 27/3 Division 5 x /6 Multiplication 17 –(4 + 3) Parentheses(addition) Find the value of each expression using order of operations 3+7x6/3-4 What are you going to do first? Multiplication
