Character Guide

2 Bell ringer: Read “The History of Mystery” (2 mins.)
Turn to your partner and discuss any mystery books that you have read and enjoyed. Any “who done it?” movies that you have seen? Are there common elements found in these mysteries?

3 Parts of a Mystery Story
A mystery story has a certain outline that it needs to follow. It has specifics that relate to the characters, setting, plot, problem and solutions. First, characters should have a good physical description. The main character is the one who should get to the bottom of the mystery and solve the mystery. The main character(s) may make a mistake and get tangled into the plot. Other characters involved in the story assist or deter the main character in each of the mysteries stories

4 Next, the setting should be a familiar place where you can close your eyes and picture where the story is taking place. The setting creates interest and excitement.

5 Next, your mystery should be filled with action and suspense
Next, your mystery should be filled with action and suspense. Something exciting should occur in the beginning to get the reader interested in the story. The mystery has a problem to solve, like who committed a crime or where something is hidden. Clues are embedded in the story and should be analyzed to solve the story.

6 Finally, the solution should be believable
Finally, the solution should be believable. The clues must be included in the story with no surprises available for the reader to uncover.

20 GRAMMAR LESSON (DOL) Collective noun- is a word that names a group.
People: audience, chorus, committee, crew, a couple (pair) Animals: brood, flock, gaggle, herd Things: assortment, batch, bundle, cluster Use a plural verb with a collective noun when the noun refers to the individual parts or members of the group. Use a singular verb when the noun refers to the group as a unit.

21 Examples of Subject/Verb Agreement:
The class have completed their projects. (Class is thought of as individuals.) Plural verb The class has elected its officers. (Class is thought of as a unit.) Singular verb Notice in the examples above that any pronoun referring to a collective noun has the same number as the noun. In the first example, their refers to class. In the second example, its refers to class!

22 So the answer is… Couple (is/are or serves/serve)
Couple, when used collectively to refer to a man and a woman, is usually followed by a plural verb, especially if a personal pronoun is involved in the sentence. “The couple are saving the money for a down payment on a house” is logical, since it refers to two people. Mr. and Mrs. Rogers are a married couple who serve the guests on Soldier Island.

26 FORESHADOWING In the first two chapters, several instances of foreshadowing, the literary device in which subtle hints are given that suggest how the plot will develop, arise. Find an instance of foreshadowing which foretells the dangers that the characters will soon face on Soldier Island.
