1 Warm-Up (Sept. 3) Why do you think we read and study literature? Why might literature be important?

Asking questions Discussing the literature Outer Circle Taking notes for a person in the inner circle Jotting down questions you have throughout the conversation EVERYONE must prepare questions! They will be checked as you enter class that day.

4 A question connecting the text to the real world.
World Connection A question connecting the text to the real world.  Example:  Do you think there are still vestiges of racism that exist in the world today? How do the events mentioned in the novel mirror other events that have happened in history?

5 Open-Ended Question A question about the text that will require proof and group discussion to explore the answer. Example: What role does the landscape play in the novel? What do you think is the main problem facing Lily in the novel?

6 Universal Theme A question dealing with a theme(s) of the text that will encourage group discussion about the commonality of the text. Example: What is the importance of family in the novel? How has that been compromised thus far? Based on your annotations, what is the novel’s message about forgiveness? How does that apply to other texts you’ve read?

7 Literary Analysis Question
A question dealing with HOW an author chose to compose a literary piece.  How did the author manipulate point of view, characterization, poetic form, archetypal hero patterns for example? Example: How does Kidd’s use of imagery affect the message? Why do you think she repeats key words and phrases so frequently? How does the use of a first person narrator in the text affect the experience of reading the novel?

8 Basic Rules DO NOT copy someone else’s questions. This is called cheating and you will both earn a zero, no questions asked. DO NOT get your questions off of Spark Notes. This is called cheating and you will earn a zero. Ways to earn points Volunteer to pose a question. Respond to a question. Take detailed notes of the discussion.

What details are present? What details are omitted? How is an image being created and what are its parts?
