Presentation on theme: "Purification of air & water Preservation of soil"— Presentation transcript:

1 DO NOW: Group the EGS listed below into the proper category (provisional, cultural, regulating)
Purification of air & water Preservation of soil Prevention of floods & droughts Regulation of climate Maintenance of biodiversity Cycling of nutrients Detoxification & decomposition of waste Aesthetic beauty Dispersal of seeds Moderating weather extremes Protecting people from UV rays Control agricultural pests Renew soil fertility Regulate disease carrying organisms Pollinate crops & natural vegetation

2 Valuing Ecosystem Goods & Services
Objectives: Identify & discuss monetary & non-monetary methods of valuing EGS Understand the importance of both valuation methods

3 Think about the task Today’s task What non-monetary measures can be used to value goods and services provided by this ecosystem? What will I learn? the value of EGS can be quantified using monetary and non- monetary methods why it might be important to use non-monetary methods to quantify the value of EGS sababa66, 2014, fisherman on the boat, (accessed May 28, 2014). © sababa66 / Fotolia.com Slide 1

4 Explore the idea The value of different transportation options can be compared using monetary measures such as cost. Are there other ways to quantify and measure their benefits? $1050 per school year $500 Dudarev Mikhail, 2014, Bicycle, (accessed May 28, 2014). nerthuz, 2014, Big White Tour Bus, (accessed May 28, 2014). © Dudarev Mikhail / Fotolia.com © nerthuz / Fotolia.com THINK of various ways of quantifying the benefits of each option TALK to a partner SHARE with the class Slide 2

5 Monetary measures can be used to determine the value of EGS.
LOOK at the images carefully DESCRIBE what you see to your partner IDENTIFY possible monetary measures to calculate the value of these EGS L. 6 Much like quantifying and measuring the non-monetary benefits of a transportation choice, non-monetary measures can also be used to determine the value of EGS. 7 What non-monetary measures might be used to estimate the value of goods and services found in this ecosystem? sababa66, 2014, fisherman on the boat, (accessed May 28, 2014). © sababa66 / Fotolia.com Slide 5

8 Why might it be important to use non-monetary methods to quantify the value of EGS?
Are there benefits of EGS that non-monetary methods can measure that monetary methods cannot? Are there situations where non-monetary measures might be more effective or appropriate than monetary measures? kjay, 2014, Douglas Fir Tree Silhouette, (accessed May 28, 2014). © kjay / Fotolia.com Slide 6

9 What are ecosystem services worth?...
Much of the Mississippi River Valley’s flood protection services were destroyed when adjacent wetlands were drained and channels altered. As a result, in 1993 floods resulted in damages estimated at $12 BILLION, partially from the inability of the Valley to lessen the impacts of the high volumes of water. Over 100,000 different animal species -- including bats, bees, flies, moths, beetles, birds & butterflies – provide free pollination services. One-third of human food comes from plants pollinated by wild pollinators. The value of pollination services in the U.S. alone is estimated at $4 – 6 BILLION per year.

10 What are ecosystem services worth?...
80% of the world’s population relies on natural medicinal products. Of the top 150 prescription drugs in the US, 118 originate from natural sources: 74% from plants, 18% from fungi, 5% from bacteria, and 3% from one snake species.

11 Exit ticket: Why is it important to consider the non-monetary value of EGS? Give an example of a situation where a non-monetary method might be more effective or appropriate to use than an monetary method in valuing EGS.
