Pitiful Christians 1 Corinthians 15:1-19
Sermon Pitiful Christians 1 Corinthians 15:1-19
2
Today wraps up the most important week in the life of the most important person who ever lived.
3
One of the greatest skeptics who ever lived faced the resurrection issue head on.
4
1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.
5
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.
6
6 After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; 7 then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; 8 and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also.
7
9 For I am the least of the apostles, and not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.
8
12 Now if Christ is preached, that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised; 14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain.
9
15 Moreover we are even found to be false witnesses of God, because we testified against God that He raised the Messiah Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised; 17 and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.
10
18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.
19 If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied. 1 Cor 15:1-19
11
The skeptics – those who say there is no resurrection.
Those I will call PITIFUL CHRISTIANS.
12
THOSE WHO ARE SKEPTICS You don’t have to be a modern, sophisticated, well educated person to be skeptical.
13
Matt 28:16-17 But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. 17When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful
14
Paul is inviting investigation.
This is of first importance – it all stands or falls on the issue of the Resurrection. Paul is inviting investigation.
15
THOSE WHO BELIEVE Our investment in the truth of Jesus and the Resurrection is to be so huge, sacrificial, and pervasive that, if it proves to be wrong, then we are to be the most pitied people in this world.
16
What a Pitiful Christian looks like
She has a hope that is not based on what this world has to offer. He has peace and joy that are not dependent on circumstances. She has a love that is not based on the person being loved, but is based on being loved by God in Jesus.
17
He has a patience and perseverance that are steadfast and immovable-
1 Cor 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.
18
WE ARE CALLED TO BE “PITIFUL” CHRISTIANS
19
WE ALL DIE AND NO ONE REMEMBERS US.
1 Cor 15:32, ..”If there is no resurrection, ‘Let us eat, drink, for tomorrow we die.’ ’’ Without the Resurrection, all the mystery and wonder that life holds means only one thing – WE ALL DIE AND NO ONE REMEMBERS US.
20
Are you a pitiful believer, or a pitiful non-believer?
But what the SKEPTICS don’t want to admit is that without the Resurrection, we’re not significant at all. Are you a pitiful believer, or a pitiful non-believer?
21
What’s at stake is a glorious eternity with God, or a terrible eternity apart from God.
Heaven or Hell.
22
Jesus died for our sins according the Scriptures, ; He was buried, and He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.
23
The ABC’s of coming to faith –
A - Admit that your sin keeps you from God and that need His grace – That means there is GOOD NEWS FOR YOU B- Believe that Jesus is the only savior who can heal your heart. C- Confess to God that you want to trust Jesus as your savior and Lord.
