4. When working in the shop, NEVER
Run
Play practical jokes
Roughhouse
Jump from one level to another
Distract someone when they are working

5. When working in the shop, ALWAYS
Keep work and storage areas clean and organized
Remove all fire and safety hazards at end of day
Wear proper safety equipment
Block off unsafe areas and structures when not working on them
Report accidents immediately

Bent knees
Straight back and spine/neck
Body erect
Push up with legs
Arms close to body
Always ask for help on heavy, large, or awkward items!

No loose-fitting clothes, scarves, ties, or jewelry while operating power tools
Hair tied back or covered while operating power tools
Long sleeve shirts buttoned at cuff or rolled up while operating power tools.

10. Proper Attire You may bring work clothes to change into at school
Wash these often!
Wash hands after working in the shop!

11. Wear protective eyewear when working around:
Painting
Spraying
Sanding
Cutting
Drilling

12. Ear Protection
Wear ear protection when working in a loud environment for an extended amount of time

13. Gloves
DO wear gloves to protect against abrasion, punctures and solvents
DON’T wear gloves when operating saws and tools in which the fabric could get caught

14. Ladder Safety Do not substitute a chair or box for a small ladder
When using a straight ladder, the base should rest on a level surface and the distance from the base to the surface the ladder is leaning on should be about ¼ the length of the ladder

15. Ladder Safety
Make sure ladders are secure. An assistant should support the ladder against accidental slipping and sliding.
Never stand on the top rung or step of a ladder
Never move a ladder when someone is standing on it
Secure tools when working on a ladder
Never drop or toss items from a ladder
Only one person at a time on a ladder

16. When Working With Tools
Keep work area clean
Wear proper clothing and protection
Be approved to use a tool before doing so
Do not use a tool with a frayed or exposed wire
Report all suspected tool defects immediately

Avoid accidental start up—make sure tool is off when plugged in and don’t keep finger on trigger when not in use
Unplug tools when making adjustments to them
Ground all power tools. If the tool has 3 prongs, plug it into a 3-hole outlet

Don’t force tools
Don’t overreach
Use clamps to hold work in place so both are free
Don’t leave tools or machinery running while unattended

Don’t brush away sawdust while tool is running
Return tools to their proper storage space as soon as you’re done with them
NEVER touch, talk to, or surprise someone who is operating a tool

Be approved before you handle any instrument, circuitry, or equipment
Do not work around electrical equipment without shoes
Inspect equipment before using and report any suspected defects or irregularities
Even when disconnected, some electrical equipment can cause shocks.

21. Lighting Safety
Any occurrence of electrical shock, no matter how slight, must be reported immediately
No food or drink is permitted in the light booth or around lighting instruments

22. Lighting Safety
Always secure lighting instruments to the electrics with a safety cable
Always wear gloves when handling lamps

23. Paints, Chemicals, and Solvents
Compare labels and use products with least toxic ingredients
Brushing and dipping methods are preferable to spraying methods
Always spray paint outside with a face mask
Don’t eat paint, kids.

24. Makeup Safety Don’t lend or share makeup with anyone!
Wash hands before and after applying makeup to yourself or anyone else
Wash sponges and brushes after use
Replace old makeup
Avoid aerosol products when possible
Avoid creating clouds of powder that can be inhaled

25. Makeup Safety Moisten brushes and pencils with clean water, not saliva
After removing spirit gum or latex replace lost skin oils with moisturizer
