VCU NSWB partnered with Highland Support Project (HSP) and Asociacion de Mujeres del Altiplano (AMA) to bring service, education and health screening to indigent Mayan women in Guatemala
AMA in spanish means love.
This organization is centered on improving the quality of life for Guatemalan women

3. Stove Building
A typical family will have an open fire in their home, with poor ventilation systems
This smoky environment causes an increased incidence of asthma and respiratory infections, which coupled with poor healthcare, can be deadly

4. Yes, we actually did manual labor
Also, cooking over an open fire takes a lot of time and effort for the woman of the house, which shackles her to her home, and leaves her with no time for herself or to pursue other interests or work.

5. Diabetes screening clinic
40 women came to the clinic for NSWB to…
Collect a brief health history
Collect a fasting blood glucose level
Measure height and weight
We managed this all in one hour!!!

6. Health Education Diabetes Hydration
Taught them about the signs and symptoms of diabetes and how to recognize when to seek medical treatment
Explained the nutritional difference between home cooked foods and processed foods
Educated about the health risks of soda and high sugar foods
Hydration
Guatemalan children ages 2-5 have high mortality rate due to dehydration
Children are only given coffee to drink and only at meal times
Educated the women about the importance of hydration in children

8. We did other things, too Ate A LOT of food...
Met with a bone setter, who explained the use of plants and other herbs in his trade
Met with a shaman and participated in a Mayan religious ceremony
Visited an organic coffee co-op
Learned to salsa
Ate A LOT of food...
