Grant decides not to run in 1876!

Liberal Republicans want Grant out…so did Democrats. United together and pulled for Horace Greeley (Editor of NY Paper)
Greeley loses anyway… exhausted from campaign, he dies just weeks after election was finished.

6. Election of 1876 “End of Reconstruction”
Republicans: Rutherford Hayes (Governor of Ohio)
Democrats: Samuel Tilden (Governor of New York)
Huge Controversy!
Tilden wins popular vote—loses electoral vote by One! 20 Electoral votes in question!
Republicans dominated the investigation…looked into it, and gave election to Hayes.
(First time candidate wins popular vote and loses)

7. Democrats Challenge Ruling!
“Compromise of 1877”
Democrats would accept ruling of commission if:
1) Federal troops moved out of the last two states they were in.
2) Federally funded RR from TX to West coast to help with Southern economy.
3) Conservative Southerners appointed to the cabinet.
