Divide into groups of 2-3 students What is Culture? ACTION POINTS Activity One (10 minutes) Divide students into collaborative work groups of 2 to 3. Instructor: Before we can talk about Cultural Competence, we must first understand the definition of culture. What is culture? Take two minutes to discuss this topic with your neighbor. Write down your group’s definition of culture. Group Discussion: Instruct students to discuss their definitions for culture. Allow 2-3 minutes for groups to share their thoughts with the class.

Handout 1: Keep your Culture ACTION POINTS Distribute Handout 1: Keep Your Culture Instructor Lets take a look at the worksheet entitled “Keep Your Culture”. Let’s look at how well you know other cultures? You are instructed to pick the country or religion that is associated with the belief, custom or habit. Allow students 5 minutes to determine answers and then go over worksheet as a class.

12 Diversity Beans In teams, you are going to each get six jelly beans. Your goal is to write both the color and the flavor of the bean. Distribute Handout 3: Diversity Beans Instructor: Next we are going to work with a Diversity Beans activity. In teams, you are going to each get six jelly beans. Your goal is to determine and write down the flavor of the bean based upon its color.

Class Discussion: Have the groups to share their answers with the full group.Ensure that students understand that you can not judge someone simply by what is seen on the surface (or by their cultural beliefs).

15 The Point of the Activity
We should never judge others. We must learn to accept and respect the differences of others. Instructor: It takes between seconds for us to judge a stranger. Is that fair at all? We must be more tolerant of others and their cultural beliefs. Too often, we are quick to judge and fear those that we don't understand. We have to learn to be patient and try to understand someone and their culture.. ACTION POINTS Review slide

16 Tolerance Pledge I will:
“Examine my own biases and work to overcome them, set a positive example for family and friends, work for tolerance in my own community, speak out against hate and injustice.” (Handout 4) ACTION POINTS Distribute Handout 4: Tolerance Pledge. Have one student read the pledge aloud for the entire class.

17 Now You See It … Now You Don’t!
Instructor: Culture is like an iceberg. The majority of one’s culture is below the surface. Only about 1/8 of an iceberg is visible above water. You have to go beyond the surface to truly know and understand someone of a different culture.

Handout 5: Visible/Invisible ACTION POINTS Distribute Handout 5: Visible/Invisible. Have students to write down both visible and invisible aspects of their own culture. Call on volunteers to share their thoughts.

Culture is like an iceberg. Most aspects (or influences) of culture are beneath the surface ACTION POINTS Review slide Instructor: Again, culture is much like an iceberg. Most aspects of culture are just below the surface. You have look beyond the surface to truly know and understand someone of a different culture. Remember…do not pre-judge. Look beyond the surface of others to truly understand them and their culture.

“People hate what they don’t understand.” Anonymous Change Your Mind! Change the World! Instructor: “People hate what they don’t understand.” By accepting the differences that exists between cultures and individuals, you began to become a culturally competent person who will treat all people the same. As a healthcare professional, you will provide the same quality and competent care to all patients while being considerate and respectful of their culture. Change Your Mind! Change the World!

22 Cultural Competence is …
being able to effectively work with people from different backgrounds and cultures. Instructor: Now that we understand why and how people are different; we should now discuss cultural competence. Cultural Competence is being able to effectively work with people of a different culture.

To respond to projected demographic changes in the US. To eliminate long-standing disparities. To improve quality of services and healthcare outcomes. To meet federal mandates. To gain competitive edge in the world. These people will act differently and think differently from the way that you do. Healthcare professionals have to attempt to remain knowledgeable about each aspect of their changing population.

27 To Improve Quality of Services and Healthcare Outcomes
Healthcare providers: Must provide holistic care and work with all types of people. Must be respectful of and to all types of people. Realize that each person is unique. ACTION POINTS Review the above slide. Instructor (closing statement): To improve the quality of healthcare, providers must provide care and work with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Healthcare providers must also realize that each person with whom they work is unique. And even though each patient is unique, all patients are entitled to receive the same quality of care regardless of these differences. Instructor: What are your questions? Administer Post-Test (10 minutes) Before dismissing students, instructor should have each student share something learned from today’s lesson.
