6 The Importance of Fluency
The less effort students devote to sound/word identification, the more attention they have available to devote to meaning. Students who lack fluency may not easily acquire more complex skills; this holds true in other academic areas as well. It is a worthwhile outcome measure for judging the effectiveness of instruction.
