District Accountability Report LCAP Goal 4: Positive School Environment, Climate and Culture with Equity at the Core, and Support for the Whole Child April 25, 2017 What changes are we implementing to continue building on the above progress and when will we provide the next update

2 SDUSD Immigrant Students
Over 50,000 students speak a language other than English at home 10% of all SDUSD students are foreign-born San Diego Unified serves approximately 30,000 immigrant students. These students make a vital contribution to our school community. 2

3 SDUSD Immigrant students: Support our students’ success
San Diego Unified is a strengths-based system. Language and cultural diversity are important strengths immigrant students bring to our schools Our students represent: 61 Countries 171 Languages

4 Access to a Broad and Challenging Curriculum
San Diego Unified has invested in the academic success of our immigrant students Reclassification testing now open to 2nd graders Schools receiving reclassification kits including pre-populated forms for all eligible students LOTE tests now offered in 14 languages -- up from 5 -- to let students receive credit for existing skills, so they can access additional course options System 44 literacy curriculum (based on the 44 sounds in the English language) being piloted across district International Centers offer differentiated pathways to meet the needs of individual students, providing access to grade-level coursework Internal organization to support this work: Office of Language Acquisition part of Instructional Cabinet, working collaboratively with Office of Secondary and Leadership and Learning English Language Learner resource teachers train school-based teachers to align lesson plans with common core and English Language Development Standards

5 Closing the achievement gap
The focus on instruction is showing results Long-term English learners reduced by 2,000 in 2 years Reclassification rate for students who are eligible: 23.7% Over 1,000 students passed the LOTE exam International Center students thriving: After the first semester, of the students who received a grade, 73% of them passed their math course SBAC scores for Latinos: Up 5 points SBAC scores for English Learners: Up 6 points Graduation rates for Latinos: 87% Graduation rates for English Learners: 70% Graduation rate for students reclassified before Grade 8: 96% 5

6 Positive School Environment and Culture
Fear and trauma are direct threats to the academic success of our students: Schools report rising levels of anti-immigrant intolerance Teachers report increased parent concerns 6

7 Positive School Environment and Culture
Board Actions: December 12, 2016, resolution reaffirming right of all students to public education regardless of immigration status April 25, 2017, resolution supporting ban on companies building border wall Recognizing this threat to student achievement, our the school board has taken a strong stand in support of immigrant students 7

8 Positive School Environment and Culture
Based on Board Actions the District has: Notified all staff and parents of their legal rights as immigrants and/or their obligation to protect the education rights of immigrants Filed amicus brief to join Santa Clara County vs. Trump Protecting sanctuary cities from federal retribution 8

9 Family and Community Engagement
Support for Immigrant students and Families has been led by the new Family and Community Engagement team This was the first major initiative of our new FACE team, starting with the Celebration of Light on December 12, 2016 Over 40 community partners including SDPTA, ADL, Mexican Consulate, The Center, SDEA, AASD, 9

From the first event in December, the San Diego Unified FACE team has been leading the citywide work on these issues USD/SDUSD Educators Symposium: School Safety and Climate USD Partnership: Restoring Respect Conference Equity Coalition led by Student Equity Ambassadors Add graphics: Other partner logos

Now FACE is taking this work on campus to serve students and families directly: Opening Neighborhood Centers Established and maintained key partners that include Mexican Consulate, Immigration Forum, Alliance San Diego, Casa Cornelia, ACLU, IRC, Say San Diego, and many more Partnered with SDCCD Outreach Department (AB540) Centralized Center for International Families and Students (formerly DACA Ballard Center FACE SDUSD PD has established strong communication and information sharing with ICE 11

Holding Immigration and Citizenship workshops w/key partners More than 16 Community Forums impacting 2,000 families have already participated in a citizenship workshop organized by FACE Consulate, Immigration Forum, Alliance SD, Casa Cornelia 12

Planning for the future Partnership with the Mexican Consulate to support immigrant students and families Baja reports more than 5,000 American-born students have arrived in their schools since the start of the year Kindergarten teachers cross collaboration Curriculum Support cross border Adopt a teacher / adopt a school / new arrivals student mentors Parent Workshops: Understanding the Two Education Systems and a Parents Relationship and Role with Our Two School Systems Cross border Instructional visits
