Feedstock Mapping Model A Starting Point
Project Aims Identify key data sources on arisings of materials streams valuable to the bio-refining industry Assess the quality of these data sources and review Map quantified material arisings regionally Use known fate to generate figures of available bio-resources
5
Material Arisings Four material streams / groupings created and analysed Using existing data sets Waste (SEPA statistics) Municipal solid waste, commercial & industrial waste Food & Drink by-products - Municipal solid waste, commercial & industrial Waste Agricultural residues (Whisky, beer & fish sector study, Scottish Agricultural College, 5th quarter blood report,) Whisky by-products (draff, pot ale, lees & washings), brewing Dairy whey, fish and shellfish, slaughterhouses Waste water sludges (Scottish Water)
6
Total Materials Arising - 27Mt
7
By-Products Arising by LA and Source
8
Shortlist Chemicals of Interest Bio-Resource Content (%w/w)
Protein Fat Carbohydrate Carbon Nitrogen Hydrogen Sulfur Iron Dietary Fibre Magnesium Calcium Zinc Phosphorus Potassium Sodium Copper Manganese Selenium
9
Bio-Resource Arising? Potential Arising of any given Bio-resource by:
Local Authority location Year Material Sub-fraction Fate
10
Protein Arising - Heat Map But what about bio-resource availability?
11
Bio-Resource Availability?
Accessibility constraints - Current fate of feedstock - Economics related with disposal to this fate - Haulage costs to identified location Bio-resource only available Bio-refinery presents more economically viable route for feedstock
12
Next Steps Assess information available and act on recommendations
Agree model hosting and management of enquiries Further model development Collation and addition of further waste/by-product data sets (bakery waste, forestry, algae and CO2) Addition of further bio-resource types - Development of a more user friendly tool - Development of forecasting capabilities
