Part of presentation based on Canadian Career Development Foundation Program Topics covered include: The Five Gifts (messages) Self exploration, planning and goal setting VCE, VET & VCAL Career Resources available Pathways General question session

2 The Five Gifts CHANGE IS CONSTANT Consider: Impact of technology
Changes in types of jobs Young people need to be: Adaptable, flexible, skilled, motivated, knowledgeable, effective communicators entrepreneurial & resilient

3 The Five Gifts 2. FOLLOW YOUR HEART Know yourself Believe in yourself
Consider: Values, beliefs, and interests become dreams and goals (self exploration) Help teenagers turn dreams to reality

4 The Five Gifts FOCUS ON THE JOURNEY
Set a direction leading to a preferred future Teenagers need to set their own achievable, concrete goals (short & long term) ie. Career Action Plan, work practices, results -Work experience, Careers Expos, part time work, school, leisure activities -keep options open

5 The Five Gifts ACCESS YOUR ALLIES
Build strong relationships with parents, friends, teachers, coordinators, employers, coaches and so on Networking – “not what you know but who you know”

6 The Five Gifts LEARNING IS ONGOING
Keep learning to keep pace with change. Concept of life long learning Tracking your assets: write a resume to record skills and abilities, electronic career portfolio Keep your resume up to date

7 VCE Year 11 – 6 subjects x 2 units = 12 units
eg. Units 1 and 2 Accounting English compulsory Base VCE subject selections on: Interests, what you are good at and prerequisite subjects for tertiary courses

8 VCE How does EDSC assist in subject selection?
All Year 10 students have a MIPs (Managed Individual Pathways Interview) All Year 10 and 11 students undertake one on one counselling in Term 3 All Year 10 students complete Work Experience

9 VCE All Year 10’s complete Work Experience from 9 Sept – 20 Sept
All Year 10’s will participate in a La Trobe University Experience Day on 26 June One on one careers counselling available to all students at Year 10 and Year 11

10 VCE & VET VET-Vocational Education & Training
Can complete a TAFE certificate as part of VCE VET certificate counts as one VCE subject It does contribute to the ATAR (as either scored or unscored assessment) More hands on. Equips students with employable skills

11 VCAL Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning
Offered at East Doncaster SC Covers: Literacy and Numeracy Skills, Industry Specific Skills, Work Related Skills and Personal Development Skills Also offered at TAFE and The Pines Learning

12 VCAL VCAL is an alternative to VCE. It is a senior school certificate.
There are 3 levels: Foundation: Equivalent to Year 10 Intermediate: Equivalent to Year 11 Senior: Equivalent to Year 12

13 VCAL EDSC model: 2 days at school (covering literacy & numeracy, work related skills & personal development skills) 2 days completing a school based apprenticeship/traineeship in chosen industry field of interest 1 day at TAFE completing certificate qualification

14 TERTIARY OPTIONS POST YEAR 12
UNIVERSITY – complete Bachelor degree (undergraduate) (3 – 5 years) Post graduate: Masters, PH D Independent learner Lectures, tutorials, exams Fees: $4,000 – 9,000 approx

15 TERTIARY OPTIONS TAFE-complete Diploma or Advanced diploma (1-2 years)
More hands on, more practical Smaller classes On going assessment, no pressure of exams Fees: variable per year

16 Which course do I choose?
Consider: Type of learner Content of course Work Experience opportunities paid/voluntary (also called work placement or IBL – industry based learning) Study programs & exchange programs Facilities Other?

17 How do you find out about courses?
See Careers counsellors Visit tertiary institution information sessions (during term and school hols) and open days (usually in August) Visit Careers Expos Careers Expo at EDSC on 17 July for students Tertiary institution guest speakers visited in May. Year 10 Excursion to La Trobe Uni

18 PATHWAYS TAFE TO UNIVERSITY ALWAYS consider pathways
2 years of TAFE will take 1 – 1 and a half years off a university bachelor degree Consider Associate Degrees Government funding based on proceeding to higher qualification ie. Diploma to degree Ie. Degree to TAFE will mean TAFE fees will be full fees ($10,000??)

Things are certainly different to when we were at school Encourage your son/daughter to follow their dreams Share the journey with them They will potentially have 5-6 career changes during their lifetime Encourage the concept of lifelong learning
