Make Literacy a Priority Language Arts curriculum is teacher generated. There is a strong focus on phonemic awareness and oral language development. Literacy instruction is woven into every moment of the day. Letter People-phonics curriculum Handwriting without Tears Curriculum is based on training and experience in grades K-3 – Reading First, Readwell, Anita Archer, Nellie Edge, Etc. Phonemic Awareness and Oral Language Development is part of daily routines- choice time (what did you build… tell me about it) calendar (Today is Thursday, hold your hand under chin and say it, clap, it, count it, what’s the first part, when I make the sound /th/ I touch my tongue to my teeth…), lining up (if your name starts with /b/) , snack what letter friend would like your /g/ g/ granola bar or when is your birthday, what do you need to celebrate, etc – it it is important we do it ALL day EVERY day! Developmentally appropriate is less about WHAT you teach and more about HOW you teach it- Make it fun so kids will be engaged, make it achievable so kids will be successful

There is no such thing as “Independent Work” in preschool – “I’m still pretty new” Some HS students will pursue career working with children, most will become parents some day. Potential to grow our own teachers- build community Pursue Innovative Strategies to Provide Intervention Instruction NKN High Students enrolled in Child Development use the Preschool as Learning Lab.
