70 A.D. Romans destroy the temple in Jerusalem. Jews forced to go elsewhere. Later, the Muslims build al-Aqsa Mosque on the same site.

1979 Israel and Egypt – peace agreement. Israel returns the Sinai Peninsula. U.S. President Jimmy Carter arranged talks between Egypt’s President Anwar Sadat and Israel’s Prime Minister Menachem Begin. A peace agreement known as the Camp David Accords was signed.

Israel agreed to: 1. recognize the PLO as a representative for the Palestinians 2. Palestinian get some self-rule in Gaza Strip and W.Bank. Israel will remove some settlers. PLO agreed to: 1. recognize Israel’s right to exist in peace and security 2. Stop terrorist attacks

2000 Second intifada Israel builds security wall in Gaza and the West Bank.

2006 to present Hamas wins most legislative seats in the territories. (Hamas has vowed to eliminate Israel.) Violence on both sides.

Israeli security fence-
The purpose is to protect Israeli settlements from Palestinian suicide bombers. The UN, however, has told them to stop building it since it has treated Palestinian communities unfairly, cutting them off and dividing them. Slide not needed if using walls activity
