The Pre-Application Faculty are required to submit a Senior Promotion Pre-Application to the DFCM Senior Promotions Committee (SPC) in order to obtain feedback regarding readiness for promotion.

3.1 RESEARCH Promotion to Associate or full Professor based on research requires that the candidate has a record of sustained and current productivity in research and research-related activities. It is expected that research advances will be communicated through the publication of papers, reviews, books and other scholarly work.

3.1 Research Requirements for documentation in each of the areas whose attributes are described below are outlined in the Manual. Research funding Publications Scientific presentations Participation, leadership and mentorship in the research community

3.1 Research Assessment will be performed on the basis of the originality and importance of the research, it’s impact on the discipline and a judgement of the candidate’s stature in the field relative to his/her peers locally, nationally and internationally.

3.2 Creative Professional Activity (CPA)
“The Faculty of Medicine acknowledges CPA under the following three broad categories:” Professional Innovation and Creative Excellence Contributions to the Development of Professional Practice Exemplary Professional Practice Examples Page 15 In the Manual

3.2 CPA 3.2.1.1 Professional Innovation and Creative Excellence
The making or developing of an invention, development of new technique, conceptual innovation, or education program inside or outside the University To demonstrate professional innovation, the candidate must show an instrumental role in the development, introduction and dissemination of the above categories Contributions to the Development of Professional Practice The candidate must demonstrate leadership in the profession, professional organizations, government or regulatory agencies that has influenced standards or enhanced the effectiveness of the discipline Examples may include guideline development, health policy development, government policy, community development … Exemplary Professional Practice The candidate must show that his or her practice is recognized as exemplary by peers and has been emulated or otherwise had an impact on practice Page 15 In the Manual

3.2 CPA Assessment will be performed on the basis of evidence of sustained and current activity. The focus should be on creativity, innovation, excellence and impact on the profession (not on the quantity of achievement) There must be evidence that the activity has changed policy making, organizational decision-making or clinical practice beyond the candidate’s own institution or practice setting, including when the target audience is the general public

Assessment - Part A Consideration for applicant in preparing CPA material It is important that your CPA dossier include specific detail on the CPA(s), information concerning your role (leadership vs team member) and any information that can support the impact and significance of the CPA Page In the Manual

Assessment - Part B Department Promotions Committee Reviewer Guide for CPA The purpose of the guide is to assist in the evaluation of the CPA of applications to the promotion and DECANAL Committee The categories within this framework may be useful in guiding discussion around specific areas of the CPA

3.3 Teaching and Education
Promotion requires that the candidate has contributed in a meaningful way to achievement of the Faculty’s and University’s educational mission. The nature, quantity and quality of these contributions will be evaluated with reference to department and hospital norms. Page 18 In the Manual

In the Faculty of Medicine, teaching and education can encompass the following components: Formal teaching Curriculum and course development Application of information technologies Educational leadership and administration Faculty development Scholarship in education Research in education Quality assurance and evaluation of educational process and outcomes Assessment of learners

Assessment - the Manual advises that the criteria be applied by the DPC relative to the norm for the department or division. It is unlikely that all the criteria will apply to any one individual: Teaching/education activity Quality of teaching/education contribution Educational innovation and development Education leadership Educational scholarship Page 20 In the Manual

Candidates seeking promotion based on excellence in teaching and education must: Demonstrate significant and high quality contributions to teaching and/or education related activities in at least ONE of the following: Sustained excellence in teaching Participation in education or curriculum development activities Contributions to the field of health professional education Education leadership in faculty, department, division or hospital Page 19 In the Manual

3.3 Teaching and Education
Candidates seeking promotion based on competence in teaching and education must: An effective teacher will have the following attributes. No one person is expected to have all of these attributes. Mastery of the subject area Skill in one or more of lecturing to large groups, facilitation of small groups, one-to-one teaching, supervision, mentoring Evidence of educational consultancies Recognition of expertise and leadership by other jurisdictions Accreditation (national, international level) Educational scholarship Page 19 In the Manual

Waiver of External Review A Waiver of External Review is only applicable to faculty members who are being considered for promotion to Associate and full Professor solely on the basis of sustained excellence in teaching and education. It recognizes the fact that some faculty members may spend a large portion of their time in clinical work and teaching as opposed to scholarship/CPA and therefore are not necessarily known nationally or internationally THUS, a candidate with a Waiver of External Review is NOT expected to be recognized at the national or international level The waiter should NOT be used for a candidate where CPA is an important component of the evaluation

Waiver of External Review Action by the candidate – before submitting final dossier in September: Meet with Chief and DFCM Chair to receive “support” Must identify a request for Waiver of External Review at the time of the Pre-Application (April 3) Action by the Department DFCM Chair: Must submit a request for Waiver of External Review, together with an up-to-date CV for the candidate to the Dean no later than June 1 Approval: Can only be granted by the Dean

3.3 Teaching and Education
The Pre-Application requires the following documents: Teaching Dossier List of teaching / education activity (hours, workshops, etc.) Template available on the website No supporting documents are required at this point. Teaching Data Summary Report All teaching is listed. Include teaching effectiveness scores (TES). No evaluations or supporting documents are required at this point.

3.3 Teaching and Education Work Time
Provide a statement of your approach to teaching, including an assessment of the impact of teaching activities.

3.4 Administrative Service
Service within the University and to external agencies forms an important and often time consuming aspect of many faculty members’ academic careers. Administrative Service in itself cannot be the main criteria. Significant service contributions may include: Service to the department (beyond what is normally expected as a faculty member Service to the Faculty of Medicine (committee chair, special project, lead coordinator) Service to the University (committee chair, lead coordinator of a special project) Service to the professional, clinical or research discipline (president of national or internal organizations, committee chair, conference organizer) Service to the municipal, provincial or federal government or non-government organizations Page 23 In the Manual

3.4 Administrative Service
Assessment - the Manual advises that there should be evidence of sustained and current activity. The focus should be on the impact of the service activities, not only the quantity of activities There must be evidence that the service activities have had a significant impact within the university community or with the wider community, which may be discipline or professional specific
